SAIDAM, MAMDOUH SABRI (ABU SABRI) (1937-1971)

Born in the village of Aqer, near Ramleh, in 1937; was educated in Gaza and Egypt; received a BA in Geography from Alexandria University, Egypt; worked as a teacher in Algeria; served as head of the Cultural Dept. at the PLO Office in Algeria; received military training in Algeria and China; became the deputy head of military arm of Fateh (Al-'asifa); was also a member of Fateh Central Committee; lead Palestinian Resistance operations in Palestine in the late 1960s; was commander of the Palestinian forces in the 1968 battle if Al-Karameh; was put later in charge of Fateh forces in Amman (until 1970); died of cancer in Damascus on 24 July 1971.

ولد في قرية عاقر بالقرب من الرملة عام 1937؛ تلقّى تعليمه في غزة و مصر؛ حصل على درجة البكالوريوس في الجغرافيا من جامعة الإسكندرية؛ عمل مدرساً في الجزائر؛ شغل منصب رئيس قسم الثقافة في مكتب منظمة التحررير الفلسطينية في الجزائر؛ تلقى تدريب عسكري في الجزائر و الصين؛ أصبح نائب رئيس الذراع العسكرية لفتح (العاصفة) ؛ كان أيضاً عضواً في اللجنة المركزية لحركة فتح؛ قاد العديد من عمليات المقاومة الفلسطينية في فلسطين في أواخر الستينيات؛ كان قائداً للقوات الفلسطينية في معركة الكرامة عام 1967؛ عانى من مرض السرطان و توفي بأثره في دمشق في 24 تموز/ أيلول 1971.
