TUBI, ASMA (1905-1983)

Born in Nazareth in 1905 to a Palestinian Orthodox Christian Family; was educated at the English School in Nazareth; studied Greek, then the Holy Qur’an for two years in order to improve her Arabic writing skills; was among the first Palestinian women literary writers in the 20th Century; moved to Acre following her marriage; was a founding member of the Women’s Union in Acre from 1929-48; was also an active member in the YWCA and the Young Orthodox Women’s Association; worked at local radio stations as broadcaster, incl. the Palestine and Near East radios in Jaffa; was also editor of the women’s page in the Filastin newspaper; after the 1948 Nakba lived in Lebanon; worked as journalist, radio broadcaster and editor of women’s pages in Lebanese papers including Al-Ahad published in Beirut; was Sec.-Gen. of a women’s union as well as of the Orthodox Women’s Society in Lebanon; was awarded the Lebanese Constantine Great Medal in 1973; composed seven theater plays and published around ten literary works, incl. My Big Love (Poetry Collection) (Arabic, Beirut, 1972), ‘Asl Shajaret Al-Milad’ (The Origin of the Christmas Tree); died in Beirut in 1983.

طوبي، أسمى (1905 - 1983) ولدت في مدينة الناصرة عام 1905؛ درست في الكلية الإنجليزية في الناصرة؛ درست اللغة اليونانية والقرآن الكريم لمدة سنتين وذلك لتطوير مهاراتها الكتابية باللغة العربية؛ أولى الكاتبات الفلسطينيات في القرن العشرين؛ انتقلت إلى عكا بعد زواجها؛ عضو مؤسس لاتحاد المرأة الفلسطينية في عكا في الفترة بين (1948-1929)؛ كانت ناشطة في جمعية الشابات المسيحية ورابطة الشابات الأرثوذكسيات؛ عملت كمذيعة في محطات أنباء محلية، بما فيها إذاعات فلسطين والشرق الأوسط في يافا؛ محررة صفحة المرأة في صحيفة فلسطين؛ بعد النكبة الفلسطينية عام 1948 عاشت في لبنان؛ عملت صحفية ومذيعة ومحررة صفحة المرأة في الصحف اللبنانية، بما فيها صحيفة الأحد المنشورة في بيروت؛ كانت أمينة عامة لإحدى الجمعيات النسوية في لبنان، إضافة إلى عضويتها في جمعية المرأة الأرثوذكسية في لبنان؛ نالت جائزة قسطنطين الأكبر اللبنانية عام 1973؛ ألفت عدداً من المسرحيات ونشرت نحو عشرة مؤلفات أدبية؛ توفيت في بيروت عام 1983.
