THABET, THABET (1951-2000)

Born in Ramin village in 1951; studied Medicine at Baghdad University; was active in the Palestinian student movement in Baghdad; joined Fateh in 1968; opened a clinic in Tulkarem; was criticized by some Palestinians for supporting normalization of relations with Israel; was talking peace with Israelis since the late 1980s; was arrested by Israeli authorities for six months then under house arrest for three years; was released in 1991 on the eve of the Madrid peace conference; was named as a PLO representative for the Madrid talks; worked as a dentist for UNRWA; was head of the Palestinian Dentists’ Association before the establishment of the PA; served as Dir.-Gen. of the Health Ministry; was a lecturer in Public Health at the Tulkarem branch of Al-Quds Open University; served as Fateh Sec.-Gen. in the Tulkarem district; his Fateh office in Tulkarem was destroyed by an Israeli missile on 16 Nov. 2000; was assassinated by Israeli undercover units while leaving his home in Ramin near Tulkarem on 31 Dec. 2000.

ثابت، ثابت (1951 - 2000) ولد في قرية رامين (قرب طولكرم) عام 1951؛ درس الطب في جامعة بغداد؛ كان نشطاً في الحركة الطلابية الفلسطينية في بغداد؛ انضم لحركة فتح عام 1968؛ افتتح عيادة خاصة به في طولكرم؛ اعتقلته السلطات الإسرائيلية لمدة ستة أشهر ثم تعرض للإقامة الجبرية لمدة ثلاث سنوات؛ تم الإفراج عنه عام 1991 ؛ تم تعيينه ممثلا لمنظمة التحرير في محادثات مدريد؛ عمل طبيب أسنان لوكالة الغوث الدولية؛ كان رئيس نقابة أطباء الأسنان الفلسطينيين في الضفة الغربية؛ مدير عام في وزارة الصحة الفلسطينية؛ محاضر في الصحة العامة في جامعة القدس المفتوحة – فرع طولكرم؛ أمين عام حركة فتح في منطقة طولكرم؛ تم تدمير مكتب حركة فتح (الذي كان يقيم فيه) في طولكرم في 16 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2000 ؛ تم اغتياله من قبل وحدات إسرائيلية خاصة أثناء مغادرته منزله في رامين (قرب طولكرم) في 31 كانون الأول/ ديسمبر 2000 .
