TANNOUS, IZZAT (1896-1972)

Born in Nablus in 1896 to a Christian family; graduated from St. George’s School in Jerusalem; studied Medicine at the Syrian Arab College in Beirut (which later became the AUB), graduating with an MD in 1918; returned to Palestine and began working as a doctor in Jerusalem; became politically active during the British Mandate, among other things as spokesperson; was a member of the Arab Party during the 1930s; head of the Arab Information Office in London during the Great Revolt of 1936; politically pro-majlesiyoun; wrote a booklet on The Palestine Case in 1936; in 1945, helped establishing an office for the Arab League in London; served as representative of the Palestine Arab Higher Committee at the UNGA during the late years of the British Mandate; joined the Arab Higher Committee in 1946 and later became head of its Treasury Dept.; tried to prevent partition of Palestine by negotiating with the British and demanding that they alter their policy; established the Arab Palestine Office in Beirut in 1949; headed the Arab Higher Committee delegation to the UN in the 1950s; established the Palestine Arab Refugee Office in New York in 1954; was a founding member of the PLO in 1964; served as head of the PLO Office in New York until 1968; author of The Palestinians: A Detailed Documented Eyewitness History of Palestine Under British Mandate (New York: IGT Co., 1988); died in the 1990s.

طنوس، عزت (1896-1972) ولد في نابلس عام 1896؛ تخرج من مدرسة سانت جورج (المطران) في القدس؛ درس الطب في الكلية السورية العربية في بيروت (التي أصبحت تعرف بالجامعة الأمريكية)؛ نال شهادة الطب عام 1918؛ عاد إلى فلسطين وعمل طبيباً في القدس؛ عرف بنشاطه السياسي في عضوية الحزب العربي برئاسة جمال الحسيني في الثلاثينات خلال الانتداب البريطاني؛ رئيس مكتب الإعلام العربي في لندن خلال ثورة عام 1936؛ كتب مؤلفاً عن القضية الفلسطينية عام 1936؛ ساعد في تأسيس مكتب للجامعة العربية في لندن عام 1945؛ عمل ممثلاً للجنة العربية العليا في الهيئة العمومية التابعة للأمم المتحدة خلال السنوات الأخيرة للانتداب البريطاني؛ انضم إلى اللجنة العربية العليا عام 1946 وأصبح رئيساً للدائرة المالية فيها؛ أسس المكتب العربي الفلسطيني في بيروت عام 1949؛ مندوب اللجنة العربية العليا للأمم المتحدة في الخمسينات؛ أسس مكتب اللاجئين العرب الفلسطينيين في نيويورك عام 1954؛ عضو المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني الأول الذي أنشأ منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية عام 1964؛ رئيس مكتب منظمة التحرير في نيويورك حتى عام 1968؛ توفي عام 1972 .
