SAYEL, SA’AD (Abu Walid) (1932-1982)

From Kufr Qalil, near Nablus, in 1932; studied Military Engineering at the Jordanian Military College, graduating in 1951; enrolled at military courses in Britain in 1954; joined the Jordanian army in 1956 and became an infantry brigade commander; underwent further military training in Egypt and Iraq in 1958 as well as in Britain then the US (1960 and 1966); left the Jordanian army in Sept. 1970 and joined Fateh; became Fateh commander of the Yarmouk forces; chaired the PLO’s Higher Military Committee in the Lebanon from the late 1970s; was a senior aide of PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat and served as his chief-of-staff; military commander of the PLO forces; PNC member; served mostly in Lebanon, holding the rank of a Brigadier; in 1976, was involved in direct consultations with the US ambassador to Lebanon about protection of the US Embassy; was elected member of the Fateh Exec. Committee in its Aug. 1980 conference in Damascus; was killed in the Beka’a Valley, Lebanon, on 29 Sept. 1982 (PLO leaders accused Syria, while others suspected the Abu Nidal organization to be behind the assassination); was buried in Al-Yarmouk Refugee Camp, Syria; the PA has named its Military Academy in Jericho after him.

صايل، سعد (ابو وليد) (1932-1982) من كفر كليل، قرب نابلس، عام 1932؛ درس الهندسة العسكرية في الكلية العسكرية الأردنية وتخرّج عام في 1951؛ انتسب لعدة دورات عسكرية في بريطانيا عام 1954؛ وانضم إلى الجيش العربي الأردني في 1956 وأصبح قائد لواء المشاة؛ شارك في دورات التدريب العسكري في مصر والعراق في 1958 وكذلك في بريطانيا ثم الولايات المتحدة (1960 و 1966)؛ ترك الجيش الأردني في أيلول 1970 وانضم إلى حركة فتح؛ أصبح قائداً في قوات اليرموك؛ ترأس لجنة منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية العسكرية العليا في لبنان من أواخر السبعينيّات؛ كان مساعد أعلى لرئيس منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية ياسر عرفات؛ وعمل مديراً لمكتبه وقائداً عسكري لجيش منظمة التحرير؛ عضو المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني؛ وتولى مهام رتبة قائد لواء في قوات المنظمة في لبنان؛ في 1976، شارك في مؤتمرات مباشرة مع السفير الأمريكي للبنان حول حماية السفارة الأمريكية؛ انتخب عضو في اللجنة المركزية لحركة فتح في مؤتمرها في آب 1980 في دمشق؛ قتل في قرية البقاعه، لبنان، في 29 أيلول/ سبتمبر 1982؛ دفن في مخيم اليرموك للاجئين في سوريا؛ أطلق اسمه على المعهد العسكري الفلسطيني في أريحا بعد تشكيل السلطة الفلسطينية.
