SARTAWI, ISSAM (1935-1983)

Born in Acre in 1935; gained a BA in Medicine from Baghdad University; later specialized in Cardiology (MD) in the US; led his own guerilla faction in the late 1960s before becoming Fateh member; was charged with special PLO missions; was a leading and successful advocate of developing contacts with (moderate) Israelis; helped establishing the Palestinian Red Crescent Society; led the Action Organization for the Liberation of Palestine (AOLP), a non-combatant medical aid organization, from 1969 (which was re-incorporated into Fateh in 1971); became an advisor to PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat on US & European affairs; was considered a controversial figure in the PLO because of his daring diplomatic maneuvers; held meetings with Israeli members of the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Council in 1976-1977; received the Austrian Kreisky Prize along with Israeli Arieh Lova Eliav in 1979 for his efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict; was frequently criticized at the PNC and repeatedly resigned but Arafat refused to accept; held direct PLO negotiations on the release of prisoners with Arieh Lova Eliav in Vienna in Oct. 1982; was assassinated on 12 April 1983 during the Socialist International Congress in Portugal by the Abu Nidal group; was buried in Amman three days later.

سرطاوي، عصام (1935-1983) ولد في عكا في عام 1935 حصل على شهادة البكالوريوس في الطب من جامعة بغداد؛ ثم تخصص في دراسة القل ب ووظائفه (دكتور طب) في الولايات المتحدة؛ مسؤول للمهات الخاصة لمنظمة التحرير الفلسطينية؛ كان قائد و محامي دفاع ناجح لتطوير العلاقات مع (معتدل) الإسرائليين؛ ساعد في تاسيس الهلال الاحمر الفلسطيني؛ تولى منظمة العمل للتحرير الفلسطيني (‎AOLP) منظمة المساعدات الطبية غير المقاتلة، من 1969 (التي أعيد دمجها مع فتح في 1971)؛ أصبح مستشاراً مسؤولاً لرئيس منظمة التحرير الفلسطيني ياسر عرفات في الولايات المتحدة و للشؤون الأوروبية؛ اعتبر كرمز مثير للجدل في منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية لجرئته الدبلوماسية؛ عقد اجتماعات مع أعضاء إسرائليين للمجلس الإسرائيلي الفلسطيني في (1976-1977)؛ حصل على جائزة اوسترن عريسكي مع الإسرائيلي لوفا الياف في 1979 لمجهوده لإيجاد حل سلمي للصراع الفلسطيني- الإسرائيلي؛ عقد مفاوضات منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية لاطلاق سراح السجناء مع اريح لوفا الياف في فينا في تشرين الأول/ أكتوبر 1982؛ اغتيل في الثاني عشر من نيسان/ أبريل 1983 خلال مؤتمر الاشتراكية الدولي في البرتغال؛ دفن في عمان بعد ثلاثة أيام من اغتياله.
