SABBAGH, HASIB (1920-)

Born in Tiberias in 1920; graduated from the Arab College in Jerusalem in 1938; received a BA in Civil Engineering from the AUB in 1941; helped establish a contractors company in Haifa in 1945; fled to Lebanon in the course of the 1948 Nakba; worked as an engineer in various projects, incl. an airport in Tripoli, Lebanon, in 1950 and a yard to store oil pipes for Iraq Petroleum Co. in Homs, Syria, in 1951; co-founded with his cousin Said Khoury and Kamel Abdul Rahman the Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) in Beirut in 1952 (relocated to Athens during the civil war in 1975), which soon after was subcontracted by the San Francisco-based Bechtel Group Inc., to help build an oil refinery in Aden; PNC and PLO Central Council member; established the Diana Tamari Sabbagh Foundation in 1978 in memory of his late wife (with millions of dollars donated particularly for the promotion of education and culture); helped found the Welfare Association in Geneva in 1982; helped bring PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat into a dialogue with the US in the 1980s; founder of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, in 1993; created an endeavored Chair for Middle Eastern Affairs at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York in 1995; in 1999, donated the Diana Tamari Sabbagh Center, for Birzeit University, housing, among other things, the fine arts collections; has sponsored a professorship at Harvard University and a Senior Fellowship at Princeton; Honorary Board of Trustees member of Al-Manar University of Tripoli, Lebanon; serves as Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the IPS since 2001; retired after suffering a stroke in 2002; remains involved in philanthropic activities, such as donating money to institutions; received an honorary degree for his achievements in the business world from the AUB in 2003; serves as Chairman of the CCC; serves on the National Advisory Board of the American Committee on Jerusalem; a biography of his was published by the Middle East Institute under the title From Palestinian Refugee to Citizen of the World (1996).

صباغ، حسيب (1920- ) من مواليد طبريا عام 1920؛ خريج المعهد العربي في القدس عام 1938؛ حاصل على شهادة البكالوريوس في الهندسة المدنية من الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت عام 1941؛ ساعد في تأسيس شركة للمقاولين في حيفا عام 1945؛ نزح إلى لبنان خلال النكبة الفلسطينية عام 1948؛ عمل كمهندس في مشاريع مختلفة، بما فيها مطار في طرابلس، لبنان، عام 1950 ومستودع لتخزين أنابيب الوقود لشركة النفط العراقية في حمص، سوريا، عام 1951؛ أسس مع ابن عمه سعيد خوري وكمال عبد الرحمن شركة المقاولين المتحدة في بيروت عام 1952 (نقلت مقرها إلى اليونان خلال الحرب الأهلية عام 1975) التي سرعان ما تعاقدت مع شركة بخت ل,. Bechtel Group Inc المتواجدة في سان فرانسيسكو للمساعدة في بناء مصفاة وقود في عدن؛ عضو المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني والمجلس المركزي لمنظمة التحرير الفلسطينية؛ أسس مؤسسة ديانا تماري صباغ عام 1978 إحياء لذكرى زوجته الراحلة (وتبرع بملايين الدولارات لدعم مشاريع ثقافية)؛ ساعد في تأسيس مؤسسة التعاون في جنيف عام 1982؛ مؤسس مركز تعميق الحور الإسلامي-المسيحي في جامعة جورج تاون Georgetown University في واشنطن عام 1993؛ ساهم في تمويل مخصصات مقعد دراسي endeavored chair للشؤون الشرق أوسطية في مجلس العلاقات الخارجية في نيويورك عام 1995؛ تبرع عام 1999 بنفقات تأسيس بمركز ديانا تماري صباغ لجامعة بيرزيت؛ دعم بعثة في جامعة هارفارد وزمالة أستاذية في جامعة بررنستون Princeton University؛ عضو فخري في مجلس أمناء جامعة المنار في طرابلس، لبنان؛ رئيس مجلس أمناء مؤسسة الدراسات الفلسطينية في بيروت منذ عام 2001؛ تقاعد بعد إصابته بجلطة دماغية عام 2002؛ لا زال يدعم العديد من الأنشطة الخيرية ويتبرع لعدد من المؤسسات؛ حاز على شهادة فخرية لانجازاته في عالم التجارة من الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت عام 2003؛ عضو في المجلس الاستشاري الوطني للجنة الأميركية لشؤون القدس؛ نشرت مؤسسة الشرق الأوسط سيرته الذاتية تحت عنوان من لاجئ الفلسطيني إلى مواطن عالمي (1996).
