SABA, FUAD (1902-1984)

Born in Shafa Amr on 14 Dec. 1902; educated at the Frères, Greek Orthodox and Maronite schools in Haifa, then at St. George’s Anglican School in Jerusalem; graduated from the AUB with a B.Com. in 1924; also taught at the AUB; returned and established his own accounting office in Jerusalem (Saba & Co.) in 1926, after qualifying as a Certified Accountant (A.C.C.A.); later established branches in Haifa and Jaffa, then in Beirut, Amman, Damascus and, after 1948, in all other Arab countries; helped in the establishment of the Arab Bank in 1930; also helped set up the Palestinian National Fund; was a leading member of the Palestine Arab Party; was active in resisting the Zionist threat and was appointed Secretary of the Arab Higher Committee in 1936; as such, was exiled together with other Committee members to the Seychelles Islands in 1937 by the British Mandate authorities; was released in 1939; was member of the Palestinian delegation to the Roundtable Conference at St. James’ Palace in London in Feb. 1939, where he rejected the British White Paper proposals; settled in Beirut until 1942, when he was allowed to return to Jerusalem; resumed work in his accounting firm; was instrumental in founding Arabia Insurance Co. and Al-Mashriq Investment Co.; in 1948, moved Saba & Co.’s Head Office to Beirut, from where he and his partners expanded into the Arabian Gulf, Iraq and North Africa; passed away in Beirut in Aug. 1984.

سابا، فؤاد (1902-1984) من مواليد شفا عمرو عام 1902؛ درس في مدارس الفرير، الروم الأرثوذكس والمدارس المارونية في حيفا ثم في كلية المطران(سانت جورج) في القدس؛ خريج الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت عام 1924 تخصص تجارة؛ عين مدرساً في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت؛ عاد إلى البلاد وأسس مكتب محاسبة خاص به في القدس (سابا وشركاه) عام 1926 ثم افتتح فروعاً أخرى في حيفا، يافا، بيروت، عمان ودمشق وبعد عام 1948 قام بتأسيس فروع في عدة دول عربية؛ ساهم في تأسيس البنك العربي عام 1930 وكان له دوراً في تأسيس الصندوق الوطني الفلسطيني؛ كان عضواً قيادياً في الحزب العربي الفلسطيني؛ كان ناشطاً في مقاومة المخططات الصهيونية وعين سكرتيراً للهيئة العربية العليا عام 1936؛ قامت سلطات الانتداب البريطاني بنفيه مع أعضاء آخرين إلى جزر السيشل في عام 1937؛ تم الإفراج عنه عام 1939؛ كان عضواً في الوفد الفلسطيني إلى مؤتمر الطاولة المستديرة الذي عقد في قصر سانت جيمس في لندن في شهر شباط/ فبراير عام 1939؛ استقر في بيروت حتى عام 1942 عندما سمح له بالعودة إلى القدس؛ استأنف عمله في مكتب محاسبة خاص به؛ كان له دوراً بارزاً في تأسيس شركة التأمين العربية وشركة المشرق للاستثمار؛ في عام 1948 نقل المكتب الرئيسي لسابا وشركاه إلى بيروت ومن هناك توسع مع شركائه إلى الخليج العربي، العراق، وشمال إفريقيا؛ توفي في بيروت في شهر آب/ أغسطس عام 1984.
