QARA’IN, NA’ELA HAMDAN (1951-1999)

Born in Jerusalem on 24 Jan. 1951; attended Schmidt Girls’ School; studied at Birzeit College and the AUB, graduating with a BS in Nursing in 1973; worked as junior lecturer of Nursing at the University of Jordan from 1974-75; returned to Jerusalem and worked as Assistant Director of Nursing at Al-Maqassed Hospital in Jerusalem from 1975-76; continued her studies and earned an MS in Nursing from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, in 1978, a degree in Public Health from Harvard University, Boston, in 1982; and a PhD in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, USA’ in 1989; worked for Unicef first as consultant from 1989-1992, then as Health Project Officer from 1993-1995 (and for a short term in 1993 as officer in charge of UNICEF); also served as consultant for the America-Mideast Educational and Training Services (AMIDEAST) in Jerusalem from 1990 to Jan. 1994; after the establishment of the PA, became consultant for the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation; also worked as consultant for the Harvard Institute for International Development, the Women Center for Legal Aid and Counseling in Jerusalem, the Canadian International Development Aid (CIDA), and others; after 1996, independent consultant, leading needs assessment teams for the Welfare Association Consortium for the Management of the Palestinian NGO Project and the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics Gender Unit, Ramallah; was member of the Palestine Nursing Association, the Palestine Public Health Association, and the Palestinian Council of Health; was stabbed in the chest near the Musrara Quarter in Jerusalem on 11 Feb. 1999, by a 23-year old Palestinian, who mistook her for an Israeli (he turned himself in to Israeli police after realizing his mistake).

قراعين، نائلة حمدان (1951-1999) من مواليد القدس عام 1951؛ تلقت تعليمها في كلية الشميدت للبنات بالقدس؛ درست في كلية بيرزيت والجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت وحازت على شهادة البكالوريوس في التمريض عام 1973؛ عملت كمحاضرة في التمريض في الجامعة الأردنية خلال (1974-1975)؛ عادت إلى القدس وعملت كمساعدة لمدير التمريض في مستشفى المقاصد بالقدس لمدة عام (1975-1976)؛ أكملت دراستها وحازت على شهادة الماجستير في التمريض من جامعة ويسكونسون بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية عام 1978، وعلى شهادة في الصحة العامة من جامعة هارفارد، بوسطن عام 1982، وعلى شهادة دكتوراه في الصحة العامة من جامعة حون هوبكنز، ماري لاند، الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية عام 1989؛ عملت مع اليونيسيف أولاً كمستشارة (1989-1992)، ثم كمديرة مشروع الصحة (1993-1995) (ولمدة قصيرة في عام 1993 كمسئولة عن اليونيسيف)؛ مستشارة للأمديست في القدس (1990 ولغاية كانون الثاني/ يناير 1994)؛ بعد تأسيس السلطة الوطنية الفلسطينية في الأراضي الفلسطينية، أصبحت مستشارة لوزارة التخطيط والتعاون الدولي الفلسطينية؛ عملت أيضاً مستشارة لمؤسسة هارفارد للتنمية الدولية، مركز المرأة للإرشاد القانوني والاجتماعي في القدس، الوكالة الكندية للإنماء الدولي CIDA وغيرها؛ بعد عام 1996، مستشارة مستقلة لاتحاد جمعية التعاون لإدارة مشروع المنظمات الأهلية الفلسطينية ووحدة الجندر التابعة للجهاز المركزي للإحصاء الفلسطيني برام الله؛ عضوه في نقابة التمريض الفلسطينية، نقابة الصحة العامة الفلسطينية، والمجلس الفلسطيني للصحة؛ اغتيلت بطعنة في صدرها بالقرب من حي المصرارة بالقدس في الحادي عشر من شباط/ فبراير عام 1999 على يد شاب فلسطيني يبلغ من العمر 23 عاماً الذي أعتقد أنها إسرائيلية (ذهب إلى الشرطة الإسرائيلية وسلم نفسه بعد أن أدرك غلطته).
