NASIR, HANNA MUSA (1935-)

Born in Jaffa in 1935 to a Christian-Anglican family; son of Musa Nasir; received an MA in Physics from the AUB in 1962, and a PhD in Nuclear Physics from Purdue University, US, in 1967; returned to Palestine after the June 1967 War to participate in the development of Birzeit College into the first University in Palestine; became founding Pres. of the University serving in that post until his deportation by Israeli authorities to Lebanon in Nov. 1974 following pro-PLO student demonstrations; was based in Amman during his years in exile; independent PNC member since 1976; PLO Exec. Committee member from 1977-84 and put in charge of the Palestine National Fund until 1982; later responsible for higher education on PLO committees; returned to the West Bank in April 1993, resuming position as Pres. of Birzeit University until his retirement in 2004; remains chair of the PNC Education Committee; received several awards, incl. the Legion of Honor from France in 1996 and an Honorary Doctorate from the AUC in 2002; was appointed by Pres. Yasser Arafat to head the Central Elections Commission in Oct. 2002; member of the Administrative Board of the International Association of Universities; was UNESCO Rotating Chair in Archaeology 2004.

ناصر، حنا موسى (1935- ) ولد في يافا في عام 1935؛ حصل على شهادة الماجستير في الفيزياء من الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت في 1962، والدكتوراه في الفيزياء النووية من جامعة Purdue في الولايات المتحدة في عام 1967؛ عاد إلى فلسطين بعد حرب حزيران 1967 للمشاركة في تطوير كلية بيرزيت لتصبح أول جامعة فلسطينية؛ أصبح رئيساً للجامعة حتى قيام السلطات الإسرائيلية بإبعاده إلى لبنان في تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر 1974؛ أسس وأدار مكتب الارتباط بجامعة بيرزيت في عمان خلال سنوات إبعاده؛ عضو مستقل في المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني منذ 1976؛ عضو في المجلس المركزي لمنظمة التحرير من (1977-1984) ورئيساً للصندوق الوطني الفلسطيني حتى 1982؛ ثم مسؤولاً عن التعليم العالي في منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية؛ عاد إلى الضفة الغربية في نيسان/ أبريل 1993؛ استأنف عمله كرئيس لجامعة بيرزيت حتى تقاعده في عام 2004؛ رئيس لجنة التربية والتعليم في المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني؛ حصل على عدة جوائز، منها، فيلق الشرف من فرنسا في 1996، ودكتوراه فخرية من الجامعة الأمريكية في القاهرة في 2002؛ كلفه الرئيس ياسر عرفات برئاسة لجنة الانتخابات المركزية في تشرين الأول/ أكتوبر 2002؛ عضو مجلس إدارة الرابطة الدولية للجامعات؛ تناوب رئاسة علم الآثار في اليونسكو في 2004.
