EID, BASSEM (1958-)
Born on 5 Feb. 1958 in Jerusalem; studied Journalism for three years; worked as Consultant at the Tira Social Aid Center from 1982-85; then as journalist for the Jerusalem weekly newspaper Kol Ha’ir from 1985-89; became Senior Field Researcher at B’Tselem - The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories – in 1989, and remained in that post until 1996; has been affiliated with Reporters Sans Frontières since 1993; was briefly arrested by Palestinian security forces in 1995 for criticizing the PA; founded the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group (PHRMG), in order to monitor the human rights situation under the PA; served as PHRMG Director since; received several awards, incl. the Emil Gruenzweig Memorial Award in 1992 (by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel), the McGill/InterAmicus Robert S. Litvak Human Rights Memorial Award in 1996 (by the Law Faculty at McGill University and the International Human Rights Advocacy Center InterAmicus), the 1999 International Activist Award (by the Gleitsman Foundation, US), and the Italian Freedom of Press Award in 2002 (by Informazione Senza Frontiere, Siena); has (co-authored) many articles, reports and books, incl. Neither Law Nor Justice (B’Tselem, 1995), Human Rights in the Occupied Territories Since the Oslo Accords: A Status Report (1996), The State of Human Rights in Palestine I and II (1997 and 1998).
