AL-JAZZAR, ABDALLAH (SHEIKH) (1855-1939)

Born in Acre in 1855 into a family originally from Morocco; after completing his elementary education, moved to Al-Azhar in Cairo focusing on Arabic Language and Islamic Fiqh; returned and was appointed as teacher and Imam in the Ahmad Al-Jazzar Mosque in Acre; also worked as writer at the Shari’a Court during the Ottoman period; was considered conservative regarding new Islamic currents; was appointed as Qadi (Judge) in the Acre Shari’a Court; became Mufti of Acre during the Ottoman era and the British Mandate; founded Al-Ahmadiyah School in the Mosque of Ahmad Al-Jazzar, dedicating money from the Waqf to cover the tuition fees of students; is also remembered for his special voice in reciting the Holy Qur’an; died in 1939 and was buried in the Sheikh Mubarak graveyard in Acre.

ولد في عكا عام 1855 لعائلة مغربية الأصل؛ بعد إكمال تعليمه الابتدائي، انتقل إلى الأزهر الشريف في القاهرة لدراسة اللغة العربية و الفقه الإسلامي؛ عاد و ع كمدرس و إمام في جامع أحمد باشا الجزار في عكا؛ عمل ككاتب في المحكمة الشرعية في فترة الحكم العثماني؛ ع قاضياً في المحكمة الشرعية في عكا؛ أصبح مفتي عكا في العهد العثماني والانتداب البريطاني؛ أسس المدرسة الأحمدية في جامع أحمد باشا الجزار وكرّس أموال الأوقاف لتغطية أقساط تعليم الطلبة؛ يعرف عنه أيضاً براعته في فن التجويد وتلاوة القرآن الكريم؛ توفي في عام 1939 ودفن في مقبرة الشيخ مبارك في عكا.
