AL-MASRI, HIKMAT TAHER (1905-1994)

Born in Nablus in 1905; studied at An-Najah School; received a BA in Business and Economics from the AUB in 1929; was a member in different clubs and committees such as the Rifle Club in Nablus, 1931; member of the Nashashibi-led opposition during the British Mandate period; active in the Palestinian Revolt of 1936-39; became a deputy for Nablus in the Jordanian parliament from 1950-57; was a leading member of the National Socialist Par ty; pro-royalist for Arab unity; member of various Jordanian cabinets and the chamber of deputies in the 1950s; speaker of the Jordanian parliament from 1952-53 and from 1956-57; Minister of Agriculture from 1953-54; Chair of the national conference in Nablus after the dismissal of the Nabulsi government in March 1957, to promote its reinstatement; member of the Jordanian Senate from 1962-71, at times its Acting Chairman; also worked as merchant, as Director of Haj Taher Al-Masri Co. Ltd. and involved in several other business companies; was elected to serve as one of three PLO Vice-Pres in 1964; was seen as potential PM when the PLO considered the establishment of a government-in-exile in the mid-1970s; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of An-Najah National University in Nablus from 1972-94; died in Nablus on 15 Dec. 1994.

المصري، حكمت طاهر (1905 - 1994) ولد في نابلس في 1905؛ درس في مدرسة النجاح؛ حصل على شهادة البكالوريوس في إدارة الأعمال والاقتصاد من الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت في 1929؛ كان عضواً في نوادي ولجان مختلفة مثل نادي البندقية في نابلس، 1931؛ عضو في حزب الدفاع برئاسة راغب النشاشيبي خلال فترة الانتداب البريطاني؛ اعتقل وسجن في سجن صرفند مع قادة الثورة الفلسطينية في (1936-1939)؛ أصبح نائباً عن محافظة نابلس في البرلمان الأردني من (1950-1957)؛ وانم إلى الحزب الاشتراكي الوطني، برئاسة سليمان النابلسي؛ انتخب رئيساً لمجلس النواب الأردني من (1952-1953) ومن (1957-1956)؛ عين وزيراً للزراعة من (1953-1954)؛ رئيس المؤتمر الوطني في نابلس بعد إقالة الحكومة النابلسية في آذار/مارس 1957؛ عضو مجلس الأعيان الأردني من (1962-1971)؛ كان من أبرز رجال الأعمال وترأس شركة الحاج طاهر المصري وأقام علاقات تجارية مختلفة؛ انتخب نائباً لرئيس منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية في 1964؛ رئيس مجلس أمناء جامعة ا لنجاح الوطنية من (1972- 1994)؛ توفي في نابلس في 15 كانون أول/ ديسمبر 1994.
