AL-KURD, MAHER SULEIMAN (1947-)

Born in Jerusalem on 8 Oct. 1947; studied at the AUC and received a BA in Political Science and an MA in Political Economy; continued his studies and earned a PhD in Economics from the University of Leipzig, Germany; PLO member, serving as Director of Economic Affairs of the Occupied Territories in Tunis in the late 1980s; longtime Economic Adviser to PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat also a close associate of Ahmed Qrei’a; was involved – together with Ahmed Qrei’a and Hassan Asfour - in the secret and initially informal talks with Israelis at Oslo in Jan. 1993, that eventually led to the DoP; works as Sec.-Gen. of the Higher Commission for Investment and Finance at the PA President’s Office since 1995; also served as PA Deputy Minister of National Economy from 1996 until after the Jan. 2006 PLC elections; headed the Palestinian delegation to the talks for the development of trade exchange between Palestine and Egypt in 1998.

الكرد، ماهر سليمان (1947 - ) ولد في القدس عام 1947؛ درس في الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة وحصل على شهادة البكالوريوس تخصص علوم سياسية، وعلى شهادة الماجستير في الاقتصاد السياسي؛ أكمل دراساته العليا وحصل على شهادة الدكتوراه تخصص اقتصاد من جامعة ليبزغ، ألمانيا؛ شغل منصب مدير الشؤون الاقتصادية للأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة في تونس في أواخر الثمانينات؛ مستشار اقتصادي لرئيس منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية ياسر عرفات؛ شارك في المباحثات الرسمية السرية الأولية مع الإسرائيليين التي عقدت في أوسلو في كانون الثاني/ يناير 1993؛ شغل منصب نائب وزير الاقتصاد الوطني الفلسطيني منذ عام 1996؛ ترأس الوفد الفلسطيني في المباحثات للتنمية والتبادل التجاري بين فلسطين ومصر سنة 1998.
