AL-MAJAJ, AMIN (1921-1999)

Born in Ramallah in 1921 to an Anglican Christian family; educated at St. George’s High School in Jerusalem; received a Diploma in Medicine and Surgery from AUB in 1945; became a member of the Jerusalem Municipal Council in 1950; continued his studies and received a Diploma in Pediatrics from London University in 1954; head of the Pediatrics Dept. at Augusta Victoria Hospital from 1950 to 1991; Director of the Child and Maternity Care Center that was affiliated with the Arab Women’s Union in Jerusalem from 1950-1964; member of the Jordanian Parliament, representing Jerusalem from 1957-64 and appointed Minister of Health and Social Affairs, then of Construction and Building in July 1957; appointed Minister of Health in 1964-65; worked in the Pediatrics Dept. of Maqassad Islamic Hospital from 1967 to 1982; researched in the field of malnutrition and associated diseases among children in Palestinian refugee camps and published many articles on related subjects in medical journals in the US, Germany and Britain; again member of the Jordanian parliament from 1967-88; served as Director of the Higher Council of the YMCA in East Jerusalem; assumed direction of Musa Alami’s Arab Development Society in Jericho, which taught agricultural and other skills to boys from Palestinian refugee camps; member of the 1967 dissolved Jerusalem Arab Municipal Council, re-activated by Pres. Yasser Arafat in June 1995, when he was appointed acting mayor of East Jerusalem; died in Jerusalem on 4 Jan. 1999.

ولد في مدينة رام الله في 1921؛ تعلم في مدرسة سانت جورج (المطران) في القدس؛ حصل على دبلوم في الطب والجراحة من الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت في عام 1945؛ أصبح عضواً في مجلس البلدية في القدس في 1950؛ أكمل دراسته و حصل على شهادة في طب الأطفال من جامعة لندن عام 1954؛ رئيس قسم طب الأطفال في مستشفى أوغوستا فيكتوريا (المطّلع) من عام 1950 حتى 1991؛ مدير مركز العناية بالأمومة و الطفل الذي انضم إلى اتحاد النساء العرب في القدس (1950 - 1964)؛ انتخب عضواً في البرلمان الأردني، ممثل القدس (1957 - 1964) وتم تعيينه وزير الصحة والشؤون الاجتماعية، ثم وزير التعمير والاعمار في تموز/يوليو عام 1957؛ تم تعيينه وزير الصحة (1964 - 1965)؛ عمل في قسم الأطفال في مستشفى المقاصد الخيري الإسلامي (1967 - 1982)؛ عمل كباحث في مجال سوء التغذية والأمراض المرتبطة بالأطفال في مخيمات اللاجئين الفلسطينيين و نشر العديد من المقالات المتعلقة بهذه الموضوعات في المجلات الطبية في الولايات المتحدة، وألمانيا وبريطانيا؛ عضو في مجلس النواب الأردني (1967 - 1988)؛ انتخب نائباً لأمين القدس في الانتخابات البلدية عام 1966 واستمر في موقعه حتى وفاته؛ عمل مديراً للمجلس الأعلى لجمعية الشبان المسيحية YMCA في القدس؛ توفي في القدس في 4 كانون ثاني/يناير عام 1999.
