Political Theology

Course Outline

The PASSIA academic course on Political Theology was developed upon the request of the St. Olaf College, Minnesota, USA, to provide a comprehensive seminar for their students during the period of 9 March-6 April 2023.

PASSIA consulted with colleagues and experts - both locally and internationally - in order to plan and implement such a course, which started with an introduction to political theology, and included political theology in the Middle East, as well as Jerusalem and the three faiths and their respective relaiton to the Holy Land. The course also colvered the religious vs. historical narratives, and gave an inside look into the political theology on the gorund. PASSIA organized a four-week lecture and excursion program accordingly (see below), put together a comprehensive reading package as well as a list of further research material, and served as point of contact and guidance throughout the course program.

The importance of strengthening our Palestinian presence and maintain our historical rights in Jerusalem cannot be over-emphasized as the late Faisal Al- Husseini once put it: “The existence of Palestinian organizations in Jerusalem is a reflection of the Palestinian people’s existence.”

Relying almost entirely on grants our resources are very limited. As an institution located in East Jerusalem we are subject to the Israeli legal system that in itself is a financial burden in terms of minimum wages, ancillary wage costs, pension schemes, high rents, etc. - costs funders or donors are hardly covering.

Against all odds and monetary pressures, however, PASSIA remains steadfast in the city and committed to continue its longstanding work in dialogue, policy research, education, information and publication, as well as its extensive involvement in the question of Jerusalem.
