ABU AKLEH, SHIREEN (1971-2022)

Born on 3 January 1971 in Jerusalem to a Christian family; went to the Rosary Sisters' High School in Jerusalem, then enrolled at the Jordan University of Science and Technology in Amman to study Architecture, but switched later to Journalism at Yarmouk University, from where she graduated with a BA in 1991; returned to Palestine and worked as a journalist for Voice of Palestine Radio, Amman Satellite Channel, and Radio Monte Carlo; also worked on assignments for UNRWA and Miftah; joined the Al-Jazeera media network in 1997 as one of its first field TV correspondents; soon became an iconic personality on its Arabic-language channel, gaining fame for her coverage of the second Palestinian Intifada in 2000 as well as for her stories about ordinary Palestinians and their living and suffering under the Israeli occupation. Despite being clearly identified as a journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the head and killed by Israeli forces while covering an Israeli army raid on the Jenin refugee camp on 11 May 2022; after a state funeral at the Muqata in Ramallah on 12 May, she was buried in Jerusalem on 13 May 2022 with her funeral procession attended by thousands of people.

ولدت شيرين أبو عاقلة في 3 كانون الثاني (يناير) 1971 في القدس لأسرة مسيحيّة. تخرّجت من مدرسة راهبات الوردية في بيت حنينا في القدس. درست في البداية الهندسة المعمارية في جامعة العلوم والتكنولوجيا في الأردن، ثم انتقلت إلى تخصص الصحافة والإعلام، وحصلت على درجة البكالوريوس من جامعة اليرموك في الأردن عام 1991. عادت بعد التخرج إلى فلسطين وعملت في عدة مؤسسات مثل: إذاعة صوت فلسطين، وقناة عمان الفضائية، وإذاعة مونت كارلو، ووكالة الأونروا، ومؤسسة مفتاح. انتقلت للعمل بقناة الجزيرة الفضائية في عام 1997 بعد عام من انطلاقها، حيث كانت من الرعيل الأول لمراسليها الميدانيين. وأصبحت من أبرز الصحفيين في قناة الجزيرة، حيث قامت بتغطية أحداث الانتفاضة الفلسطينية التي بدأت في عام 2000، إضافة إلى تقاريرها عن الفلسطينيين وحياتهم ومعاناتهم تحت الاحتلال الإسرائيلي. قُتلت برصاص جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي في منطقة الرأس خلال تغطيتها اقتحام قوات إسرائيلية لمخيم جنين في 11 أيار (مايو) 2022. تم تشييع جثمانها في جنازة رسمية في مقر الرئاسة الفلسطينية في رام الله في 12 أيار (مايو) 2022، ثم نقل جثمانها إلى مدينة القدس في 13 أيار (مايو) 2022، وقد شارك الآلاف من اهل القدس وفلسطين في تشييع جثمانها في جنازة مهيبة.
