ASHRAWI, HANAN (1946-)

Born in Ramallah on 8 Oct. 1946 to an Anglican Christian family; member of the GUPS in Beirut from 1967-70; member of the GUPW from 1967-72; worked at the Palestinian Information Office in Beirut from 1968-70; studied English Literature at the AUB, graduating with a BA and an MA (1970); returned Palestine in 1973 and established the Dept. of English at Birzeit University, as whose Chair she served from 1973-1978, and again from 1981-1984; was a founding member and Director of the Legal Aid Committee/Human Rights Action Project at Birzeit University in 1974; continued her studies and received a PhD in Medieval and Comparative Literature from the University of Virginia, USA, in 1981; served as Dean of Arts at Birzeit University from 1986-90, specializing in Medieval English Literature (remained a faculty member at Birzeit University until 1995); joined the Political Committees during the fist Intifada; member of the Union of Palestinian Writers; from 1991-93, member of the Palestinian Steering Committee in the peace process, Palestinian delegation spokesperson for the negotiations at the Madrid and Washington talks, and member of the Leadership/Guidance Committee and Executive Committee of the delegation; resigned from her post as spokeswoman and headed the Preparatory Committee of PICCR in 1993, then serving as its first Commissioner General until 1995; was elected PLC member for the Jerusalem constituency in 1996; appointed PA Minister for Higher Education in 1996 (until 1998, when she resigned in protest against political corruption and Pres. Yasser Arafat’s handling of the peace talks); was put in charge of the Bethlehem 2000 project; founder (in Dec. 1998) of the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) and its Sec.-Gen. since; was appointed Arab League spokesperson in July 2001; resigned from the post in 2002 over difficulties she encountered in trying to persuade the different member states to speak with a uniform voice; among the signatories of a statement published in Al-Quds on 20 June 2002, appealing for an end to suicide bombings as they destroy the possibilities of peaceful co-existence; was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize in 2003; member of the Independent International Commission on Kosovo and of numerous international advisory boards, incl. the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, DC, the World Bank Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA), and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD); Board of Trustees member of the Carter Center in Atlanta, US; has written numerous anthologies of poetry, fiction, and literary criticism; received – together with MK Zahava Gal-On – the UNESCO’s Mahatma Gandhi Medal in Sept. 2005 for efforts to find a negotiated, non-violent solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; established – together with Salam Fayyad - the Third Way faction in late 2005; was re-elected as PLC member (Third Way List) in the Jan. 2006 elections; her publications include The Modern Palestinian Short Story: An Introduction to Practical Criticism; Contemporary Palestinian Literature under Occupation, From Intifada to Independence and her autobiography, This Side of Peace: A Personal Account (1995).

عشراوي، حنان (حنان ميخائيل داوود خليل عشراوي) (1946 - ) ولدت في مدينة رام الله عام 1946؛ عضو الاتحاد العام للطلبة الفلسطينيين في بيروت في الأعوام (1967-1970)؛ عضو الاتحاد العام للمرأة الفلسطينية بين (1967-1972)؛ عملت في مكتب المعلومات الفلسطيني في بيروت منذ عام (1968-1970)؛ درست الأدب الانجليزي في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، حيث حصلت على درجة البكالوريوس والماجستير عام 1970؛ عادت إلى فلسطين عام 1973 وأسست دائرة اللغة الانجليزية في جامعة بيرزيت، وترأست الدائرة منذ عام (1973-1978) ومرة أخرى منذ عام (1981-1984)؛ كانت عضوا مؤسسا ورئيسة للجنة المساعدة القانونية - مشروع عمل حقوق الإنسان في جامعة بيرزيت عام 1974؛ أكملت دراستها وحصلت على درجة الدكتوراه في أدب القرون الوسطى و الأدب المقارن من جامعة فيرجينيا في الولايات المتحدة عام 1981؛ خدمت كعميدة كلية الآداب في جامعة بيرزيت في الأعوام (1986-0199)، وأعطت مساقات في أدب القرون الوسطى لطلاب الأدب الانجليزي في جامعة بيرزيت (وبقيت عضو هيئة تدريسية في جامعة بيرزيت حتى عام 1995)؛ عضو اتحاد الكتاب الفلسطينيين؛ بين الأعوام (1991-1993) شاركت في اللجنة التوجيهية لعملية السلام وانتدبت متحدثة باسم الوفد الفلسطيني المفاوض في محادثات مدريد وواشنطن، وعضو لجنة القيادة والتوجيه وفي اللجنة التنفيذية للوفد الفلسطيني عام (1991-1992)؛ استقالت من منصبها كمتحدثة عن الوفد الفلسطيني المفاوض وترأست اللجنة التحضيرية للهيئة الفلسطينية المستقلة لحقوق المواطن عام 1993؛ مفوضة الهيئة الفلسطينية المستقلة لحقوق المواطن حتى العام 1995؛ انتخبت عضوا في المجلس التشريعي الفلسطيني (دائرة القدس) عام 1996؛ عيّنت وزيرة التعليم العالي في السلطة الوطنية الفلسطينية من الأعوام (1996–1998) (حيث استقالت احتجاجا على الفساد وعلى إدارة محادثات السلام)؛ عيّنت مسئولة عن مشروع بيت لحم 2000؛ منذ كانون الثاني/ يناير 1998 أسست المبادرة الفلسطينية لتعميق الحوار العالمي والديمقراطية (مفتاح) عيّنت مفوضة إعلامية للجامعة العربية في شهر تموز/ يوليو 2001؛ استقالت من منصبها في عام 2002 بعد صعوبات واجهتها في إقناع الدول الأعضاء بالتحدث بصوت واحد؛ كانت من بين الموقعين على عريضة «النداء العاجل لوقف العمليات الانتحارية» التي نشرت في صحيفة القدس في 20 حزيران/ يونيو 2002؛ استلمت جائزة سيدني للسلام عام 2003؛ عضو اللجنة الدولية المستقلة لشؤون كوسوفو إضافة إلى عضويتها في الهيئة الاستشارية لعدة مجالس دولية من ضمنها مجلس العلاقات الخارجية في واشنطن والبنك الدولي - منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا ومعهد الأمم المتحدة لبحوث التنمية الاجتماعية (UNRISD)؛ عضو مجلس أمناء لمركز كارتر في أتلانتا في الولايات المتحدة؛ كتبت في مواضيع الشعر والنثر والنقد الأدبي إضافة إلى موضوع الصراع الفلسطيني - الإسرائيلي؛ نالت - مع عضو الكنيست زهافا غال أون - جائزة غاندي من منظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والتعليم والثقافة (اليونسكو) في أيلول 2005 لجهودها في إيجاد حل سلمي للصراع الفلسطيني–الإسرائيلي؛ نشرت العديد من المقالات في الصحف العالمية ومن كتبها: إلى جانب السلام (1995).
