AZ-ZARU, NADIM SALIM JIRIES (1929-)

Born in Ramallah in 1929 to a Christian family; school education in Ramallah; went to Texas, US, to study Pharmacy at Houston University; returned to Palestine and worked as a pharmacist for 12 years in Ramallah; was elected as head of the Ramallah Municipality Council from 1960-64; operated also a private travel agency until 1968; was a member of the Administration Council of the Ramallah Water Authority from 1962-69, and member of the Administration Council of the Jerusalem Electricity Company from 1964-69; Mayor of Ramallah from 1964-72; deported to Jordan by Israel on 6 Oct. 1969 after protesting the demolition of houses and declaring that Israeli soldiers were behaving like Nazis; became Minister of Transport in the Jordanian Government from Aug. 1972-74; became member of the Higher Executive Committee of the Arab National Union in Sept. 1972; was allowed back into the West Bank in Nov. 1981 on the condition that he should not engage in any political activity; remained pro-Jordanian and was among the signatories to a (unreleased) document in Nov. 1982, which recognized the PLO as the sole legitimate representative, but urged them to authorize King Hussein to negotiate on Palestinians’ behalf and to accept a confederation with Jordan; submitted his candidacy for mayor of Ramallah to the Israeli civil administration in Feb. 1986, but withdrew after assassination of the mayor of Nablus, Zafer Al-Masri, on 3 March 1986.

الزرو، نديم سليم جريس (1929 - ) ولد في مدينة رام الله عام 1929؛ تعلم في مدارس رام الله ثم انتقل إلى الولايات المتحدة حيث درس الصيدلة في جامعة هوستن في ولاية تكساس؛ عمل بعد عودته إلى فلسطين في مجال الصيدلة لمدة 12 عاما في رام الله؛ تم انتخابه رئيساً لمجلس بلدية رام الله (1960 - 1964)؛ أسس وترأس وكالة سياحة وسفر خاصة حتى عام 1968 ؛ عضو مجلس إدارة في سلطة المياه في رام الله (1962 – 1969)؛ عضو مجلس إدارة في شركة كهرباء محافظة القدس (1964 - 1969)؛ رئيس بلدية رام الله (1964 – 972 1)‎؛ تم إبعاده إلى الأردن من قبل السلطات الإسرائيلية في 6 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 1969 لنشاطه المعارض لسياسة هدم المنازل؛ أصبح وزير نقل في الحكومة الأردنية من آب/أغسطس 1972 وحتى عام 1974 ؛ عضو في اللجنة التنفيذية العليا للاتحاد الوطني العربي في أيلول/سبتمبر 1972 ؛ سمحت له السلطات الإسرائيلية بالعودة إلى الأراضي المحتلة في تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 1981 بشرط عدم ممارسة العمل السياسي؛ وكان ضمن الموقعين على أول ميثاق (لم ينشر) يعترف بمنظمة التحرير باعتبارها الممثل الشرعي الوحيد للشعب الفلسطيني في تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر 1982 ولكنه يدعو إلى تفويض الملك الحسين بالمفاوضة نيابة عن الفلسطينيين والدعوة لقيام كونفدرالية فلسطينية - أردنية؛ قدم ترشيح نفسه لرئاسة بلدية رام الله للإدارة المدنية الإسرائيلية في شباط/فبراير 1986 ، ولكنه عاد وانسحب على اثر اغتيال ظافر المصري (رئيس بلدية نابلس) في 3 آذار/مارس 1986 .
