YAISH, MAHMOUD ALI (1915-2000)

Born in Nablus in 1915; was sponsored by his uncle to study at An-Najah School in Nablus after his father - an officer for the Ottoman Army - died in combat in Yemen; moved to Jaffa following his graduation and worked for different newspapers, incl. Al-Jamia’a Al-Islamiyya (the Muslim Community) published by Suleiman At-Taji Al-Faruqi, Al-Siraat Al-Mustaqim and Al-Difa’; participated in the Revolt of 1936 and the War of 1948; then worked for the Red Cross; joined the Iraqi forces; returned to Al-Difa’ newspaper, which had moved from Jaffa to Jerusalem; produced Al-Jihad newspaper with Salim Sharif and Mahmoud Abu Zulof, which became the main Jordanian newspaper at the time, until 1966, when it stopped following a Jordanian law to limit the number of daily newspapers; began publishing Ash-Sha’ab newspaper in Jerusalem on 21 July 1970; trained a number of Palestinian journalists, incl. Akram Haniyeh, who later became editor-in-chief of Al-Ayyam newspaper; had his office closed by the Israeli authorities and Ash-Sha’ab denied distribution several times for its political positions; died in Jerusalem on 23 March 2000.

يعيش، محمود علي (1915-2000) ولد في مدينة نابلس عام 1915 حيث كان والده ضابطاً في الجيش العثماني وقتل في إحدى المعارك في اليمن؛ تكفله عمه وأدخله كلية النجاح في نابلس؛ انتقل إلى يافا وعمل في حقل الصحافة في عدة صحف مثل الجامعة الإسلامية والصراط المستقيم والدفاع؛ شارك في ثورة عام 1936 وحرب عام 1948 وبعد النكبة الفلسطينية عمل مع الصليب الأحمر الدولي ثم مع القوات العراقية ثم عاد للعمل في صحيفة الدفاع التي انتقلت من يافا إلى القدس؛ أصدر مع شركائه سليم الشريف ومحمود أبو الزلف جريدة الجهاد التي كانت من أبرز الصحف الأردنية لغاية إغلاقها عام 1966 بعد صدور قانون المطبوعات الأردني الذي وضع حدا لعدد الجرائد اليومية الصادرة في ذلك الوقت؛ أصدر جريدة الشعب في 21 تموز/يوليو 1970 والتي كانت منبراً للدفاع عن قضايا وحقوق الشعب الفلسطيني؛ تتلمذ على يده عدد من الصحفيين الفلسطينيين؛ أغلقت سلطات الاحتلال الإسرائيلي صحيفة الشعب عدة مرات ومنعت توزيعها لفترات طويلة؛ توفي في القدس في 23 آذار/ مارس 2000.
