SAMARAI, QAIS ABDUL KARIM ( ABU LAILA ) (1940-)

Born in Iraq in 1940; was active with the Ba’ath Party in Iraq; studied Economics in England from 1959-62; returned to Iraq, where he organized a left opposition and was arrested and detained by the Ba’athist regime in 1963; worked in journalism from 1965-67; joined the Palestinian resistance in 1967; former member of the PFLP; left the PFLP to form, together with Nayef Hawatmeh, the Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PDFLP), later known as DFLP; member of the DFLP politburo and its Central Committee since 1969; is thought to have written the seven articles in Al-Hurriya from Aug.-Oct. 1973, signed ‘Yasari Filastini’ (a Palestinian leftist), which developed what was known as the “Transitional Program”, a prelude to the idea of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict; arrived in the Palestinian Territories in April 1997 and established the DFLP offices in Ramallah; member of the DFLP politburo and the PLO Central Council; was elected as PLC member (DFLP-affiliated The Alternative list) in the Jan. 2006 elections.

سمراي، قيس عبد الكريم (ابو ليلى) (1940- ) ولد في العراق عام 1940؛ كان ناشط مع جماعة البعث في العراق؛ درس الاقتصاد في انجلترا من (1959-1962)؛ عاد إلى العراق لينظم المقاومة اليسارية و اعتقل من قبل نظام حكم البعثيين في 1963؛ عمل في الصحافة من (1965-1967)؛ انضم إلى المقاومة الفلسطينية عام 1967؛ عضو سابق في الجبهة الشعبية لتحرير فلسطين ثم تركها لينشئ مع نايف حواتمة الجبهة الديمقراطية الشعبية لتحرير فلسطين؛ عضو هيئتها المركزية عام 1969؛ وصل إلى الأراضي الفلسطينية في نيسان/ أبريل عام 1997 و أسس مكتب في رام الله؛ عضو اللجنة التنفيذية لمنظمة التحرير الفلسطينية؛ جرى انتخابه نائباً في المجلس التشريعي الفلسطيني عن قائمة “بديل” ائتلاف اليسار الفلسطيني في انتخابات المجلس التشريعي في كانون الثاني/ يناير 2006.
