SAMARA, ‘ADEL (1944-)

Born in Beit ‘Ur Al-Foqa, near Ramallah, on 29 Jan. 1944; graduated from the College of Political and Economic Sciences, Lebanese University, in 1965; became a firm believer and activist in socialism; was imprisoned for his political engagement in 1963, 1965 and 1966 by the Jordanian authorities, and was repeatedly put in administrative detention by the Israeli army during the period 1967-73; became Director of the Al-Bireh Cooperative Association; worked as economic editor of Al-Fajr daily in Jerusalem from 1973-77, and of Al-Shira’ bi-weekly, Jerusalem, from 1980-83; went to the UK to continue his studies and received an MA in Philosophy from Birkbeck College, University of London, and an MA in Philosophy and Political Economy from the University of Exeter, both in 1985; worked also as economic editor of Al-Arab daily, London, from 1984-87; earned a PhD in Development from the University of Exeter in 1990; returned to Palestine and worked as an economic consultant, first with the UNDP in Jerusalem from 1990-91, then with UNRWA from 1991; served as Director of Cooperation for Development, West Bank, during 1992-93; Director of Az-Zahra Research Center in Ramallah since 1993; Director of Al-Mashreq Center for Development and Cultural Studies; served as Director of Badil (Alternative Information Center) in 1997; was arrested by the PA in Nov. 1999 and imprisoned in Jericho for 23 days for signing the ‘A Cry from the Homeland’ petition complaining about PA performance and corruption (signed by 20 persons); writer and editor of the Kana’an magazine and Kana’an Online Bulletin, both dedicated to the causes of Arabic unity, development, and socialism; also makes a living as poultry farmer; has authored numerous articles, essays and books in Arabic and English, incl. The Political Economy of the West Bank: From Peripheralization to Development (1967-87) (1988) and Epidemic of Globalization: Ventures in World Order, Arab Nation and Zionism (2002).

سمارة، عادل (1944- ) ولد في بيت عور الفوقا، قرب رام الله، عام 1944؛ تخرج من الكلية السياسية والعلوم الاقتصادية، جامعة لبنان عام 1965؛ سجن عام 1966، 1965، 1963 من قبل السلطات الأردنية؛ اعتقل لعدة مرات إدارياً من قبل الجيش الإسرائيلي في فترة (1973-1967)؛ أصبح رئيس جمعية البيرة التعاونية؛ عمل كمحرر اقتصادي في جريدة الفجر في القدس من (1973-1977)، وجريدة الشراع الأسبوعية في القدس، من (1980-1983)؛ حصل على شهادة الماجستير في الفلسفة من كلية بير كبيك، جامعة لندن وشهادة الماجستير في الفلسفة و الاقتصاد السياسي من جامعة اكستير، كلاهما في عام 1985؛ حصل على شهادة الدكتوراه في التطوير من جامعة اكستير في 1990؛ عاد إلى فلسطين و عمل كاستشاري اقتصادي، أولاً في برنامج الأمم المتحدة للتطوير التنموي في القدس من (1990-1991)، ثم مع وكالة الغوث للاجئين للأمم المتحدة في 1991؛ عمل رئيساً للجمعية التعاونية للتطوير، الضفة الغربية، خلال (1992-1993)؛ رئيس مركز الزهرة للأبحاث في رام الله عام 1993؛ رئيس مركز المشرق للتطوير و الدراسات الثقافية؛ رئيس للبديل (مركز البديل للمعلومات) في 1997؛ اعتقل من قبل السلطة الفلسطينية في تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر عام 1999 و سجن في أريحا لثلاثة و عشرين يوماً بسبب توقيع عريضة “صرخة من الأرض الأصلية” يشكو فيها اداء و فساد السلطة الفلسطينية (عشرون شخصية وقعت عليها)؛ كاتب و محرر لمجلة كنعان و نشرة كنعان Online, كلاهما يتحدث عن اسباب الوحدة العربية، التطور, و الاشتراكية؛ جعل المعيشة في الحياة كنمط الدواجن؛ كتب عدة مقالات، و كتب في اللغة العربية والإنجليزية، تشمل الاقتصاد السياسي في الضفة الغربية، من الثانوية للتطوير (1967-1987) (1988) و الوباء العالمي: مجازفة في نظام العالم، الشعب العربي و الصهيونية (2002).
