SALAH, ABDUL LATIF (1882-1954)

Born in Nablus in 1882; was educated at the Faculty of Law in Istanbul; assumed various positions during the late Ottoman era and the early Arab government, set up by Emir Faisal in Damascus; became the first head of the Law Institute in Damascus; returned to Nablus after the fall of Faisal’s rule; was elected member in the Higher Shari’a Islamic Council in Nablus for four years; worked as law teacher in Jerusalem and wrote in the field; became Chairman of the Lawyers’ League; established the Hizb Al-Ahali Party in 1921 to compete with the Nablus branch of the Muslim-Christian Association; served as representative for the Nablus district in the Supreme Muslim Council from 1922-26; became a member to it in the early 1930s; founder and leader of the National Bloc (Al-Kutlah Al-Wataniyah), a moderate party, established in Oct. 1935 in Nablus, which stood for political independence of Palestine but was unable to mobilize sufficient support; member of the first Arab Higher Committee formed in 1936 and his party’s representative to it; died around 1954.

صلاح، عبد اللطيف (1882-1954) من مواليد نابلس عام 1882؛ درس في كلية الحقوق في اسطنبول؛ تبوّّأ مناصب مختلفة في أواخر العهد العثماني وأوائل حقبة الحكومة العربية التي أسسها الأمير فيصل في دمشق؛ أصبح أول رئيس لمعهد الحقوق في دمشق؛ عاد إلى نابلس بعد فرض الانتداب الفرنسي وإسقاط الحكم الفيصلي؛ عين عضواً في المحكمة الشرعية العليا في نابلس لمدة أربع سنوات؛ عمل كأستاذ قانون في القدس؛ انتخب رئيساً لعصبة المحامين؛ أسس حزب الأهالي عام 1921 التي تنافست مع الجمعية الإسلامية - المسيحية في نابلس؛ ممثل منطقة نابلس في المجلس الإسلامي الأعلى لمدة أربعة أعوام (1922-1929)؛ أصبح عضواً في المجلس الإسلامي الأعلى في أوائل الثلاثينات؛ مؤسس وقائد الكتلة الوطنية (حزب معتدل تأسس في نابلس في تشرين الأول/ أكتوبر عام 935 ودعم الاستقلال السياسي لفلسطين)؛ عضو الهيئة العربية العليا الأولى التي تأسست في عام 1936؛ توفي في نابلس حوالي عام 1954.
