AR-RAYYES, MUNIR MOHAMMED TAHER (1916-1974)
Born in Gaza in 1916; received his elementary education in the Gaza secondary school, then in Aleih, Lebanon; participated in the Revolt of 1936-39; was employed at the Gaza Municipality from 1937-44; founded and headed the Arab Palestinian Youth Club and its Jawwala Art Group in 1940 and became leader of the Arab Youth Organization in southern Palestine; was elected member in the Gaza Municipal Board in 1945; served as head of Al-Futwa forces under the leadership of Haj Amin Al-Husseini in 1947; became policy manager of Al-Jihad Al-Muqaddas newspaper (later Al-Liwa’), which was published occasionally between 1951-56; was appointed vice-mayor of the Gaza Municipality in 1953 and Mayor in 1955; following the 1956 occupation of Gaza, was removed from his post by Israel soldiers, who also shelled his house and arrested him; was jailed until March 1957 when the Egyptian administration returned; worked on improving Gaza’s infrastructure; was head of the Palestinian delegation to the first Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Conference in Cairo in Dec. 1957, the Afro-Asian Youth Solidarity Conference in Cairo in 1958, and the Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Conference in Guinea in 1960; became head of an Arab League committee to raise awareness on the Palestinian entity in 1957; was head of the founding committee of the Palestinian Arab National Union in 1958 and elected head of its Higher Executive Committee in 1960; supervised the publication of its magazine Nida’ Al-’Awda; resigned from his official posts in 1965 to dedicate his time for political resistance; initiated an underground movement (Tala’e Al-Muqawamah Al-Sha’biyya), which provided support for groups like the ANM and Fateh; was twice imprisoned by Israeli forces during 1968 and 1969 but eventually released due to his deteriorating health; was deported to Lebanon on 13 Sept. 1970 together with Dr. Haidar Abdul Shafi for supporting PLO activities; was released following the interference of the UN and returned to Gaza, where he died at Al-Shifa Hospital in March 1974.
الريس، منير محمد طاهر (1916-1974) ولد في مدينة غزة عام 1916؛ تلقى تعليمه الابتدائي في مدرسة غزة الثانوية ثم في كلية الجامعة الوطنية بعاليا في لبنان؛ شارك في الثورة الفلسطينية عام (1936-1939)؛ ع في بلدية غزة موظفاً (1937-1944)؛ أسس وترأس نادي الشباب العربي الفلسطيني وفرقته الفنية “الجوالة” عام 1940 وأصبح قائد منظمة الشباب العرب في جنوب فلسطين؛ انتخب عضواً في مجلس غزة الحكومي عام 1945؛ عمل رئيسا لقوات الفتوة بقيادة الحاج أمين الحسيني عام 1947؛ أصبح مدير قسم السياسة الخارجية لصحيفة “الجهاد المقدس” (والتي أصبحت فيما بعد تعرف بصحيفة “اللواء”) والتي كانت تصدر بشكل متقطع بين عامي (1951-1956)؛ عين نائباً لرئيس بلدية غزة عام 1953 ورئيساً للبلدية عام 1955؛ أقيل من منصبه من قبل السلطات الإسرائيلية عقب احتلالها لمدينة غزة عام 1956؛ تم قصف منزله وسجن حتى آذار/ مارس 1957 لدى عودة الإدارة المصرية الى غزة؛ عمل على تطوير البنية التحتية في غزة؛ ترأس وفد فلسطين في مؤتمر تضامن الشباب الأسيوي-الأفريقي إلى القاهرة عام 1958 ووفد فلسطين لمؤتمر تضامن الشعوب الآسيوية-الأفريقية في كوناكري، غينيا عام 1960 والوفد ذاته في أندونيسيا عام 1961؛ ترأس أيضا اللجنة التأسيسية للإتحاد القومي العربي الفلسطيني عام 1958 وانتخب رئيسا للجنتها التنفيذية العليا عام 1960؛ أشرف على تحرير مجلة نداء العودة؛ استقال من مناصبه الرسمية عام 1965، مكرسا وقته للعمل السياسي؛ أسس حركة “طلائع المقاومة الشعبية” والتي قدمت الدعم للفصائل الفلسطينية مثل حركة فتح والحركة الوطنية العربية؛ اعتقل مرتين من قبل السلطات الإسرائيلية عام 1968 و 1969 لكن تم إطلاق سراحه بسبب تدهور حالته الصحية؛ تم إبعاده إلى لبنان في 13 أيلول/ سبتمبر 1970 مع الدكتور حيدر عبد الشافي بسبب دعمهما لنشاطات منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية؛ أطلق سراحه جراء تدخل مكتب الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة وأعيد إلى مدينة غزة حيث توفي في مستشفى الشفاء في آذار/ مارس 1974.
