OTHMAN, AYYOUB MOHAMMED ABDUL HAY (1950-)

Born in Al-Bureij Refugee Camp, Gaza, in 1950 to a family originally from Zarnuqa village, near Ramleh; lecturer of Comparative English Literature at Al-Azhar University, Gaza; Chairman of the Palestinian University Professors’ Society and of the Workers’ League at Al-Azhar University, Gaza; known for his activism on the issue of the right of return and his criticism of the PA; dismissed from his position at the University in Sept. 1996 for making public information about incidents of forgery within the university; was arrested in May 1997 for two days for writing an article in Al-Bilad newspaper, criticizing the PA following the publication of the report of the General Control Commission on the abuse of authority and corruption; nominated himself as a candidate for the PA Presidency in the Jan. 2005 elections, but soon withdrew.

عثمان، أيوب محمد عبد الحي (1950- ) ولد في مخيم البريج في غزة عام 1950 لعائلة لاجئة من قرية زرنوقة قرب الرملة؛ عمل أستاذا للأدب الإنجليزي المقارن في جامعة الأزهر في غزة؛ رئيس جمعية أساتذة الجامعات واتحاد العمال في جامعة الأزهر في غزة؛ يعرف بنشاطه السياسي في قضايا حق العودة ونقده للسلطة الفلسطينية؛ تم إقالته من منصبه في الجامعة في أيلول/ سبتمبر 1996 لإفصاحه عن أحداث تزوير في الجامعة؛ تم اعتقاله ليومين من قبل السلطة الفلسطينية في أيار/ مايو 1997 لكتابة مقال في صحيفة البلاد ينتقد فيها السلطة الفلسطينية وذلك بعد نشر تقرير لجنة الرقابة العامة للفساد وانتهاك السلطات؛ أعلن نيته في ترشيح نفسه للانتخابات الرئاسية في كانون الثاني/ يناير 2005 ولكنه سرعان ما أعلن انسحابه.
