BARAMKI, GABI (1929-2012)

Born in Jerusalem on 3 Nov. 1929 to a Greek-Orthodox family; spent his early childhood in Jerusalem, then was sent as a boarder to Birzeit School until his graduation in 1946; studied Chemistry at the AUB and graduated with a BSc (1949) and MSc (1953); worked as Professor of Chemistry and Dean of Birzeit College from 1953-74; regular member in the Jerusalem Chorus since 1955; during this time he also enrolled at McGill University from where he received a PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry in 1959; was Visiting Professor at McGill University from 1972-73; served as Chairman of the Dept. for Service to Palestine Refugees at the Middle East Council of Churches, Jerusalem Committee from 1973-1996; following the deportation of its Pres. Hanna Nasser, served as Acting Pres. of Birzeit University from 1974-93; had an important role in the university’s development and steadfastness during a critical time (i.e., the Israeli occupation and the military closures of the university, especially during 1988-92); Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Council for Higher Education from 1977-1982 (and again from 1987-1992); member of the Council of PUGWASH Conferences on Science and World Affairs from 1992-2002; Consultant for the PA Ministry of Education and Higher Education since 1994; member of the PNC since 1996; President of the Palestinian Council for Justice and Peace since 1998. He died on Thursday August 30, 2012

برامكي، جابي (1929 - 2012) من مواليد مدينة القدس عام 1929؛ قضى طفولته في القدس، ثم أرسل كطالب داخلي إلى مدرسة بيرزيت حتى تخرجه عام 1946؛ حاصل على شهادة البكالوريوس في الكيمياء من الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت (عام 1949) وعلى شهادة الماجستير (عام 1953)؛ عمل كأستاذ في الكيمياء وعميد كلية بيرزيت من عام 1953 - 1974؛ عضو منتظم في كورال القدس منذ عام 1955؛ وخلال ذلك الوقت، التحق بجامعة مكغيل McGill University حيث حصل على شهادة الدكتوراه في الكيمياء العضوية Physical Organic Chemistry عام 1959؛ عين أستاذاً زائراً في جامعة مكغيل McGill University خلال الأعوام 1972 - 1973؛ شغل منصب مدير دائرة الخدمات للاجئين الفلسطينيين في مجلس كنائس الشرق الأوسط، لجنة القدس (1973 - 1996)؛ بعد ابعاد رئيس الجامعة حنا ناصر، عين رئيساً لجامعة بيرزيت بالوكالة (1974 - 1993)؛ لعب دوراً هاماً في تطوير وصمود الجامعة خلال وقت حرج (مثل الاحتلال الإسرائيلي والإغلاقات العسكرية للجامعة، خاصة خلال الأعوام 1988 - 1992)؛ رئيس اللجنة التنفيذية لمجلس التعليم العالي (1977 - 1982) ومرة أخرى خلال (1987 - 1992)؛ عضو في مجلس مؤتمرات جمعية بغواش للحوار العالمي (1992 - 2002)؛ مستشار لوزارة التربية والتعليم العالي الفلسطينية منذ عام 1994؛ عضو المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني منذ عام 1996 ؛ رئيس المجلس الفلسطيني للعدالة والسلام منذ عام 1998. توفي يوم الاثنين بتاريخ 30 آب/ اغسطس 2012.
