BARHAM, GHASSAN NAIM (1952-2014)

Born in Zababdeh, near Jenin, in 1952 to a Christian family; educated in the Jenin Secondary School then the Beirut Arab University, where he gained a degree in Law; worked as a legal officer in the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Interior; founded Filastin Al-Jadida newspaper in Jenin, with its first edition published in May 2000; announced in 2001 that he would challenge Yasser Arafat as Pres., but did not pursue his plan when the elections were postponed; calls for eliminating widespread corruption in the PA, excluding the US from the peace process, and signing a deal with Israel based on the 1947 UN Partition Plan, opposes making any concessions on the issue of Palestinian refugees; considered nominating himself as an independent candidate for the 2005 PA presidential elections following the death of Pres. Yasser Arafat but soon withdrew; runs a law office in Jenin; also writes short-stories, novels and plays. He died on the 13th of September, 2014.

برهم، غسان نعيم ( 1952 - 2014) من مواليد الزبابدة (بالقرب من جنين) عام 1952 ؛ تلقى تعليمه في مدرسة جنين الثانوية ثم في جامعة بيروت العربية حيث حصل على إجازة في المحاماة؛ عمل كمسئول قانوني لوزارة الداخلية في الإمارات العربية المتحدة؛ مؤسس جريدة فلسطين الجديدة في جنين ونشر أول عدد لها في أيار/مايو عام 2000؛ أعلن عام 2001 بأنه سيرشح نفسه للانتخابات، ولكن سرعان ما تم تأجيل إجراء الانتخابات؛ دعا إلى القضاء على الفساد في السلطة الوطنية الفلسطينية، عدم تدخل الولايات المتحدة في عملية السلام، وتوقيع اتفاقية مع إسرائيل استناداً إلى خطة التقسيم الصادرة عن الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة عام 1947؛ يعارض أية تنازلات فيما يتعلق بقضية اللاجئين الفلسطينيين؛ فكر بترشيح نفسه كمرشح مستقل في الانتخابات الرئاسية الفلسطينية التي جرت في كانون الثاني/يناير عام 2005 ، ولكن سرعان ما سحب ترشيحه؛ يدير مكتب محاماة في جنين؛ كتب القصص القصيرة والروايات والمسرحيات، توفي بتاريخ 13 ايلول/ سبتمبر 2014.
