AL-GHUSSEIN, YACOUB MOHAMMED (1900-1947)

Born in Ramleh in 1899 or 1900; educated at the Sultani School in Jerusalem, graduating in 1917; traveled to Turkey and worked at the Union and Progress Party in Izmir; studied Law at Cambridge University, UK; later worked as an inspector in a railway station until the British Mandate, then moved to the field of agriculture and business; pro-Husseini; Chairman of different Muslim youth societies in Palestine; established the Muslim Youth Society in Ramleh in 1927; member in the administrative council of Al-Umma Arab Bank; headed the Arab Fund created to gather money to support the Palestinian cause; founder, in 1932, and Pres. of the Arab Youth Congress Party, whose charter declared that the Arab World is an indivisible entity, that Palestine was part of that entity, and that the Balfour Declaration should be revoked; was elected Pres. of the 1st National Congress of Arab Youth, held in Jaffa in Jan. 1932; produced Al-Kifah newspaper in 1934; was arrested in 1933 and imprisoned in Acre; member and representative of his party in the Arab Higher Committee from 1936; became a member of the Supreme Muslim Council in 1937; was exiled by the British on 1 Oct. 1937 to the Seychelles Islands (until 1941) for being a member of the Arab Higher Committee, which was dissolved by the British; member of the Palestinian delegation to the London Conference at St. James’s Palace, Feb. 1939; represented Palestine in the Arab League Council in 1945; reconstituted his faction in 1945; died in Jerusalem on 27 Dec. 1947.

ولد في الرملة عام 1900؛ خريج المدرسة العثمانية سلطاني في القدس عام 1917؛ سافر إلى تركيا وعمل مع حزب الاتحاد والترقي في أزمير؛ درس الحقوق في جامعة كامبردج في بريطانيا، ثم عمل كمشرف في محطة سكة الحديد حتى بداية حقبة الانتداب البريطاني؛ انتقل إلى العمل في مجال الزراعة والتجارة؛ رئيس عدة جمعيات شبابية إسلامية في فلسطين؛ مؤسس جمعية الشبان المسلمين في الرملة عام 1927؛ عضو المجلس الإداري لبنك الأمة العربية؛ ترأس الصندوق العربي لجمع التبرعات لدعم القضية الفلسطينية؛ أسس حزب مؤتمر الشباب العربي عام 1932 وترأسه؛ انتخب رئيساً للمؤتمر الوطني الأول للشباب العرب المنعقد في يافا في كانون الثاني/ يناير عام 1932 أصدر صحيفة الكفاح عام 1934؛ اعتقل عام 1933 وسُجن في عكا؛ عضو وممثل مؤتمر الشباب العربي أمام اللجنة العربية العليا منذ عام 1936؛ أصبح عضواً في المجلس الإسلامي الأعلى عام 1937؛ قامت سلطات الانتداب البريطاني بنفيه مع مجموعة من القادة الفلسطينيين الأعضاء في اللجنة العربية العليا في 1 تشرين الأول/ أكتوبر عام 1937 إلى جزر سيشل وحتى عام 1941؛ عضو الوفد الفلسطيني في مؤتمر لندن المنعقد في قصر سانت جيمس في شباط/ فبراير عام 1939؛ مثّل فلسطين في مجلس جامعة الدول العربية عام 1945؛ أعاد تشكيل حزب مؤتمر الشباب العربي عام 1945؛ توفي في القدس في 27 كانون الأول/ ديسمبر 1947.
