GIACAMAN, RITA (1950-)

Born in Bethlehem on 21 March 1950; worked as a teaching and research assistant at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, from 1973-77; graduated from that University with a PhD in Clinical Pharmacy in 1977; worked as a Clinician and tutor at the Presbyterian Hospital Medical Centre, San Francisco, California, from 1977-78; returned to the West Bank and became Assistant Professor at the Biology Dept. at Birzeit University from 1978-1984; continued her studies and received an MPhil in Sociology/Social Policy with a focus on health and women from the University of Essex, Colchester, UK, in 1985; founding member and research coordinator of the Community Health Dept. at Birzeit University from 1985-1987, and since 1988 its Director; since 1993, founding member and lecturer/researcher at the Program of Women’s Studies at Birzeit University; Steering Committee member of the UK-based World University Services Training Program for Palestinian Women; member of the UNDP Committee for the Advancement of Women in Palestinian Society; conducted a variety of feasibility studies and evaluations of health and social/developmental projects in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Egypt and Yemen; has written extensively on health issues and co-authored several books, incl. Psychosocial/ Mental Health Care in the Occupied Palestinian Territories: the Embryonic System (Institute of Community and Public Health in cooperation with the Center for Continuing Education, Birzeit University, 2004).

من مواليد مدينة بيت لحم في 21 آذار/ مارس عام 1950؛ عملت محاضرة ومساعدة أبحاث في مركز سان فرانسيسكو الطبي في جامعة كاليفورنيا من 1973 - 1977؛ خريجة جامعة كاليفورنيا عام 1977 - تخصص صيدلة إكلينيكية؛ عملت كطبيبة وأستاذة في المركز الطبي التابع للكنيسة المسيحية في سان فرانسيسكو، كاليفورنيا لعام واحد 1977 - 1978؛ عادت إلى الضفة الغربية وعملت أستاذة مساعدة في دائرة الأحياء بجامعة بيرزيت من عام 1978 - 1984؛ أكملت دراساتها العليا وحازت على شهادة الماجستير في علم الاجتماع/السياسات الاجتماعية، تخصص الصحة والمرأة من جامعة إسكس University of Essex, Colchester ، المملكة المتحدة عام 1985؛ شاركت في تأسيس دائرة الصحة المجتمعية بجامعة بيرزيت ومنسقة أبحاث في الدائرة لمدة عامين 1985 - 1987 ثم مديرة الدائرة منذ عام 1988؛ عضو مؤسس ومحاضرة/ باحثة في برنامج دراسات المرأة بجامعة بيرزيت؛ عضو في اللجنة التوجيهية لبرنامج الخدمات الجامعية الدولية للنساء الفلسطينيات ومقره الرئيسي في لندن؛ عضو في لجنة تحسين وضع المرأة في المجتمع الفلسطيني، التابعة لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي (‎UNDP )؛ أشرفت على تقييم ودراسة عدة مشاريع صحية واجتماعية/تنموية في الضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة ومصر واليمن؛ تكتب بشكل متواصل عن قضايا صحية وأصدرت العديد من الدراسات، بما فيها الرعاية النفسية/ الصحة النفسية في الأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة: النظام الجنيني” معهد الصحة العامة والمجتمعية بالتعاون مع مركز التعليم المستمر، جامعة بيرزيت، 2004 .
