HALLAK, OTHMAN (1935-)

Born in Jerusalem on 5 May 1935; attended St. George’s School in Jerusalem from 1941-52; then went to the US in 1953 to study Chemical Engineering at Ohio State University, graduating with a BSc in 1958; worked as a Process Engineer with the Hercules Powder Co., Radford, Virginia from 1958-63 and the worked with Ralph M. Parson Co. of Pasadena, California, in 1963; did his Graduate Studies in Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, from 1963-64; worked as Technical Advisor for the Jordan Development Board from 1963-67, specializing in fertilizers, phosphates and potash; returned to Palestine in 1967 and invested in various entrepreneurial projects in the West Bank and Jerusalem; started the first pharmaceutical company in Palestine in 1970; also established a feed mill in the West Bank, a stone factory in the 1960s, a salt project, and a refinery; co-founder of the AIC Star Detergent Factory in Ramallah in 1973-74; established the daily An-Nahar newspaper in 1986 and served as its editor until May 1995; devotes his time to his various investment and entrepreneurial projects in the West Bank.

ولد في القدس عام 1935؛ تلقى تعليمه في مدرسة المطران سانت جورج في القدس خلال الأعوام 1941 - 1952 ذهب إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية عام 1953 لدراسة الهندسة الميكانيكية في جامعة أوهايو وتخرج عام 1958؛ عمل كمهندس علميات مع شركة Hercules Powder ، رادفود، فيرجينيا خلال الأعوام 1958 - 1963 واشتغل مع شركة Ralph M. Parson Co. of Pasadena كاليفورنيا عام 1963 تابع دراساته العليا في الهندسة الميكانيكية في جامعة كاليفورنيا، لوس أنجلوس خلال الأعوام 1963 - 1964؛ عمل كمستشار فني لمجلس التنمية الأردني خلال الأعوام 1963 - 1967 تخصص الأسمدة الكيميائية والفوسفات والبوتاس؛ عاد إلى القدس عام 1967 واستثمر في عدة مشاريع مقاولات في الضفة الغربية والقدس؛ بدأ أول شركة دوائية في فلسطين عام 1970؛ أسس أيضاً مصنع أعلاف في الضفة الغربية، مصنع حجر في الستينيات، مشروع ملح، ومعمل تكرير؛ أحد مؤسسي مصنع ستار لمواد التنظيف AIC Star Detergent Factory في مدينة رام الله في الضفة الغربية في عام 1973 - 74؛ قام بتأسيس وتحرير جريدة النهار الأسبوعية اليومية في القدس سنة 1986 حتى عام 1995 من رجال الأعمال في مشاريع الاستثمار والمقاولات.
