HAMAMI, JAMIL ABDUL RAHMAN ABDUL KARIM (1952-2023)

Born in Ma’an, Jordan, in 1952; family moved to Jerusalem in 1953; graduated from Al-Aqsa Secondary Religious School in Jerusalem in 1973; worked as Imam at the Birzeit mosque; studied Shari’a and Law at Al-Azhar School, Egypt, graduating in 1977; was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood; joined Ein Shams University to study towards an MA in 1982 but had to return to Palestine without having completed his studies for political reasons; worked as a teacher in Al-Aqsa Secondary Religious School, Jerusalem, from 1979-81; co-founder and Director of Dar Al-Hadith in Al-Aqsa Mosque in 1979; founded the Society of Islamic Sciences and Cultural Committee in 1984 and served as its Secretary since; Director of the Waqf in Bethlehem from 1985-87, then worked as assistant to the Dean of Islamic Research at the Waqf from 1987-97; was one of the founders of Hamas in 1987; participated in meetings between the PA and Hamas in Cairo and Sudan in 1995; took a different position from Hamas in the run-up to the January 1996 PLC elections, over which he left the movement; worked as researcher at the Center for Islamic Research at Al-Quds University from 1997-2003, where he also served as a lecturer and pursued his MA in Islamic Studies, graduating 2003; was closely involved with the Religious Studies Unit at PASSIA since 1998; worked as lecturer of Islamic Culture at Al-Quds University and as Executive Director of Al-Iman Secondary Schools in Jerusalem; died on 10 September 2023 after a long struggle with cancer, and was buried in the Bab Ar-Rahma Cemetery.

ولد في معان في الأردن عام 1952؛ انتقل مع عائلته للعيش في القدس عام 1953 ؛ تخرج من مدرسة ثانوية الأقصى الشرعية في القدس عام 1973؛ عمل كإمام في جامع بيرزيت؛ درس الشريعة والقانون في كلية الأزهر في مصر وتخرج عام 1977؛التحق بجامعة عين شمس لمتابعة الماجستير عام 1982 ولكنه عاد إلى فلسطين قبل أن يكمل دراسته. عمل مدرساً في ثانوية الأقصى الشرعية في القدس خلال الأعوام 1979 - 1981؛ أحد مؤسسي ومدير دار الحديث في مسجد الأقصى عام 1979 ؛ أسس جمعية لجنة العلوم والثقافة الإسلامية عام 1984 وعين أمين سر الجمعية؛ شغل منصب مدير الأوقاف الإسلامية في بيت لحم في الفترة بين 1985 - 1987، ثم مساعد عميد كلية العلوم الإسلامية في أبو ديس في القدس من العام 1987 وحتى 1997؛ أحد مؤسسي حركة حماس عام 1987؛ شارك في اللقاءات الفلسطينية في كل من القاهرة والخرطوم عام 1995 التي عقدت بين السلطة الوطنية الفلسطينية وحركة المقاومة الإسلامية حماس؛ طالب الحركات الإسلامية المشاركة في الانتخابات للمجلس التشريعي عام 1996 معارضاً دعوة مقاطعة الانتخابات؛ عمل باحثاً في مركز الأبحاث الإسلامية في جامعة القدس خلال 1997 - 2003 ؛ تابع دارساته العليا وحصل على شهادة الماجستير في الدراسات الإسلامية المعاصرة وتخرج عام 2003؛ كان منخرطاً في وحدة الدراسات الدينية في الجمعية الفلسطينية الأكاديمية للشؤون الدولية منذ العام 1998؛ عمل محاضراً في جامعة القدس ومدير تنفيذي متطوع في مدارس الإيمان الثانوية في القدس. توفي في 10 سبتمبر 2023 بعد صراع طويل مع مرض السرطان، ودفن في مقبرة باب الرحمة.
