MUQBIL, HANNA (1941-1984)

Born in Old City of Jerusalem on 4 Nov. 1941 to a Christian family from Al-Taybeh, near Ramallah; studied at the Frères College and the Al-Ibrahimieh School in Jerusalem, where he was educated by Bahjat Abu Gharbiyyeh; graduated from high school in 1959 and worked in the field of journalism, writing in the Filastin and the Manar newspapers; moved to Kuwait in 1961 and worked for Al-Hadaf, Al-Ra’ie Al-’Aam and Al-Risala papers; was deported because of his political views; returned to Jerusalem in March 1964; was briefly arrested for supporting the ideas of Gamal Abdul Nasser; began working again with Filastin newspaper, then Al-Dustour; moved to Jordan in 1967 after some pressures by Israeli authorities regarding his writings; joined Fateh in Amman and continued working with Al-Dustour in Jordan; studied Journalism at Alexandria University (via distance learning) for some time before 1967; was among the founders of the Union of Palestinian Writers and Journalists in 1969, its member and elected Sec.-Gen. from 1973-80; Board member of the Fateh weekly in Damascus from June 1970 until it was closed down on 17 Sept. 1970; also co-founded Filastin Ath-Thawra in 1970 (published in Beirut where it was supervised by Kamil Nasir); resigned over his opposition to what he considered a rapprochement policy with Israel after 1973; was elected Sec.-Gen. of the Arab Journalists’ Union in 1979 and again in Baghdad in 1983; founded Al-Quds Press in 1974 in Beirut; escaped several an Israeli assassination attempts, incl. one in Beirut on 25 July 1978; was arrested by Lebanese authorities at the Beirut International Airport for his PLO activity; worked after his release for Al-Ma’raka daily in Beirut in 1982; moved to Cyprus and founded Al-Sharq Press in 1982; was assassinated by Israeli agents in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 3 May 1984, and buried in Amman two days later.

ولد في البلدة القديمة في القدس عام 1941 ؛ درس في كلية الفرير والمدرسة الإبراهيمية في القدس؛ تخرج من المدرسة الثانوية في 1959 و عمل في مجال الصحافة، كتب في صحيفتي فلسطين و المنار؛ انتقل إلى الكويت في 1961 وعمل في صحف الهدف، الرأي العام والرسالة؛ تم ترحيله بسبب آراءه السياسية؛ عاد إلى القدس في آذار/مارس 1964 ؛ تم اعتقاله لفترة قصيرة؛ بدأ يعمل من جديد في صحيفة فلسطين، ثم الدستور، انتقل إلى الأردن في 1967 بعد بعض الضغوطات من السلطات الإسرائيلية على إثر كتاباته؛ انضم إلى حركة فتح في الأردن واستمر في العمل مع الدستور في الأردن؛ درس الصحافة في جامعة الإسكندرية )عن طريق الدراسة عن بعد( لبعض الوقت قبل 1967 ؛ كان من ضمن الذين أسسوا اتحاد الصحفيين والكتاب الفلسطينيين في 1969، وانتخب السكرتير العام للاتحاد من 1973 - 1980؛ أسس فلسطين الثورة في 1970 )نشرت في بيروت حيث تم الإشراف عليها من قبل كمال ناصر؛ تم انتخابه سكرتير عام لاتحاد الصحفيين العرب في 1979 وبعد ذلك في بغداد في 1983 ؛ أسس صحيفة القدس في 1974 في بيروت؛ نجا من العديد من المحاولات لاغتياله وكانت منها واحدة في بيروت في 25 تموز/يوليو 1978؛ تم اعتقاله من قبل السلطات اللبنانية في مطار بيروت الدولي بسبب نشاطاته السياسية؛ عمل بعد إطلاق سراحه ضمن قوات منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية في بيروت في 1982 ؛ انتقل إلى قبرص وأسس صحيفة الشرق في 1982 ؛ تم اغتياله بواسطة عملاء إسرائيليين في نيقوسيا، قبرص، في 3 آذار/مارس 1984، و دفن في عمان.
