JARALLAH, HUSSAM EDDIN (SHEIKH) (1884-1954)

Born in Jerusalem in 1884; graduate of Al-Azhar University, Cairo; leading member of the Supreme Muslim Council; in 1918, became Muslim representative to the Administrative Committee of the MCA; allied with the Nashashibis; in 1921, topped the list of candidates chosen by the ‘ulama (and fully supported by the Nashashibi family) for the title of Mufti but was persuaded, mainly by the British, to resign; was a lifelong rival of Haj Amin Al-Husseini; worked as chief justice and inspector of the Muslim religious courts in Eastern Jordan for seven years; became an inspector of Arabic Language and Shari’a education at the Education Dept. in Jerusalem in the mid-1930s; from Oct. 1937, served as the sole Muslim member of the Supreme Muslim Council after all its other members had been deported or exiled by the British; was appointed Mufti of Jerusalem and Chief Qadi on 20 Dec. 1948 (replacing Haj Amin Husseini); advocated the provision of education for women; died on 6 March 1954 in Jerusalem.

ولد في مدينة القدس عام 1884؛ تخرج من جامعة الأزهر في القاهرة؛ في عام 1918 أصبح الممثل الإسلامي للجنة الإدارية التابعة للجمعية الإسلامية المسيحية؛ في عام 1921 كان على رأس قائمة المرشحين الذين انتخبتهم هيئة العلماء ليتولى منصب مفتي القدس الأكبر ولكن السلطات البريطانية قررت تعيين الحاج أمين الحسيني لمنصب المفتي؛ عمل كرئيس محكمة العدل و مفتش المحاكم الشرعية في شرقي الأردن لسبع سنوات متتالية؛ و في منتصف الثلاثينات أصبح مفتشاً لمادتي اللغة العربية والشريعة في دائرة المعارف في القدس؛ عين مفتي القدس وقاضي قضاة في 20 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 1948 إثر النكبة الفلسطينية 1948 من قبل الحكومة الأردنية؛ دافع عن حقوق المرأة وخاصة في التعليم؛ توفي في مدينة القدس في 6 آذار/مارس عام 1954.
