KAN'AN, TAHER (1935-)

Born in Nablus in 1935; graduated from An-Najah National College; studied at the AUB and later at the University of Cambridge, UK, where he earned a PhD in Economics; worked as consultant for the Iraqi Ministry of Planning in 1964-65, then as economic specialist for the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) from 1965-67; served as Director of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development in Geneva from 1973-76 and again from 1979-82; in between, worked as economic consultant for the Ministry of Planning in the Moroccan Kingdom from 1977-78; served as Director of the Computer Development Dept. in Kuwait in 1983; moved to Jordan and worked for the Hashemite government, first as Jordanian Minister of Palestinian Occupied Territories (1984), then as Cabinet Minister of Occupied Territories Affairs (1985-86), and as Jordanian Minister of Planning (1986-89); served as General Manager of the Industrial Development Bank of Jordan from 1989-94; became advisor to the World Bank on developing finance and housing policy in Palestine in 1995-96; was appointed Jordanian Minister of State for Development Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister in 1997-98; served as Managing Director of the Arab Bank Center for Scientific Research from 2000-2002; Board of Trustees member of the Palestine Institute for Economic Policy Studies (MAS), the Institute for Palestine Studies, the Center for Arab Unity Studies in Kuwait, and the Economic Research Forum in Cairo; member of the Advisory Board of the Arab Planning Institute in Kuwait; Sec.-Gen. of the Higher Council for Science and Technology in Jordan; Managing Director of the Jordan Center for Public Policy Research & Dialogue; has authored numerous economic analysis studies.

من مواليد مدينة نابلس عام 1935 ؛ خريج كلية النجاح الوطنية؛ درس في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت ثم في جامعة كامبردج في المملكة المتحدة حيث حصل على شهادة الدكتوراه في الاقتصاد عام 1964 ؛ عمل كمستشار في وزارة التخطيط العراقي خلال 1964 - 1965 ، ثم كاقتصادي متخصص لمؤتمر التجارة والتنمية للأمم المتحدة خلال 1965 - 1967؛ شغل منصب مدير برنامج الصندوق العربي للإنماء الاقتصادي والاجتماعي في جنيف خلال الأعوام 1973 - 1976، ومرة أخرى خلال 1979 - 1982؛ عمل كمستشار اقتصادي في وزارة التخطيط في المملكة المغربية خلال 1977 - 1978؛ شغل منصب مدير دائرة تطوير الكمبيوتر في الكويت عام 1983 ؛ انتقل إلى الأردن وعمل مستشاراً للحكومة الأردنية، عام 1984 ، ثم كوزير لشؤون الأراضي المحتلة 1985 - 1986 ، ثم كوزير التخطيط الأردني 1986 - 1989؛ شغل منصب مدير عام بنك الأردن للتنمية الصناعية خلال 1989 - 1994؛ أصبح مستشاراً للبنك الدولي في سياسة السكن والتنمية المالية في فلسطين خلال 1995 - 1996 ؛ عين وزيراً للشؤون التنموية الأردنية ونائب رئيس الوزراء خلال 1997 - 1998؛ شغل منصب مدير عام مركز البنك العربي للأبحاث العلمية خلال 2000 - 2002 ؛ عضو في مجلس أمناء معهد أبحاث السياسات الاقتصادية الفلسطيني ماس في رام الله، مؤسسة الدراسات الفلسطينية في بيروت، مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية في الكويت، ومنتدى الأبحاث الاقتصادية في القاهرة؛ عضو في المجلس الاستشاري لمؤسسة التخطيط العربي في الكويت؛ أمين عام المجلس الأعلى للعلوم والتكنولوجيا في الأردن؛ مدير عام المركز الأردني للأبحاث وحوار السياسات؛ ألف العديد من الدراسات التحليلية الاقتصادية .
