KARDOSH, MANSOUR (ABU TAWFIQ) (1921-1998)

Born in Nazareth in 1921 into a Christian Arab family; was educated at the Friends’ School in Ramallah, then in Beirut; co-founded Al-Ard movement in 1959 and campaigned against Israel’s military rule over the Palestinians inside the Green Line and against the dispossession of the Palestinians until the movement was outlawed by the Israeli DM in 1966; was forced into exile and arrested for his political views and lived for a while under house arrest; established As-Sawt Publishing Association in 1975; also set up the Friends of Prisoners Association, becoming its Chairman for eight years; established the Association for Growth and Development in the 1980s, and the Arab Association for Human Rights (HRA) in 1988, serving as its chairperson until his death; helped establish Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel in 1996; died in Nov. 1998.

ولد في مدينة الناصرة في الجليل عام 1921 ؛ تلقى تعليمه في مدرسة الفرندز للأولاد في رام الله، ثم في بيروت؛ أحد مؤسسي حركة الأرض القومية في فلسطين عام 1959 والتي شنت حملاتها ضد الحكم العسكري الإسرائيلي بحق الفلسطينيين داخل الخط الأخضر وتشريد الفلسطينيين؛ قامت السلطات الإسرائيلية بنفيه واعتقاله لآرائه السياسية وعاش لفترة تحت الإقامة الجبرية؛ أسس مؤسسة الصوت لدار النشر عام 1975 ؛ وأسس جمعية أصدقاء السجناء وتولى رئاستها زهاء ثمانية أعوام؛ أسس جمعية التنمية في الثمانيات، والجمعية العربية لحقوق الإنسان عام 1988 ، حيث ترأس الجمعية حتى وفاته؛ ساهم في تأسيس عدالة - المركز القانوني لحقوق الأقلية العربية في إسرائيل - في تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر 1996 ؛ توفي في تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر عام 1998 .
