AL-MASRI, TAHER (1942-)

Born in Nablus in 1942; pursued his studies at An-Najah National University, Nablus, Aleppo College in Syria, and the North Texas State University, US, from where he graduated with a BA in Business Administration in 1965; returned to Jordan and worked for the Central Bank from 1965-73; was elected member of the Jordanian parliament and began a career in the Jordanian government, holding various positions, incl. Minister of State for the Occupied Territories (1973-74), Ambassador of Jordan to Spain (1975-78), Permanent Representative of Jordan to UNESCO (1978-83) and Ambassador to France, Paris (1978-83), non-resident Ambassador to Belgium (1979-80), Permanent Representative to the European Community (1978-80), Ambassador to the UK (1983-84); Jordanian FM (1984-88, 1991); Deputy PM of Jordan and Minister of State for Economic Affairs (1989), Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Jordanian Parliament (1989-91, 1992-93); Speaker of the Lower House of the Jordanian Parliament (1993-94); member & reporter of the Royal Commission for drafting the Jordanian National Charter in 1990; Chairman of the Board of Princess Haya Cultural Center for Children since 1992; Pres. of the National Society for the Enhancement of Freedom and Democracy from 1993-97; member of the Al-Quds Ash-Sharif defense association from 1996-2001 and since 2003; Pres. of the Board of Trustees of the Jordan University for Science and Technology, Irbid, since 1998; Pres. of the Jordanian-Spanish Friendship Association since 1998; Commissioner of Civil Societies at the Arab League since 2002; member of the Advisory Committee of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue since 2004; member and head of the Political Committee of the Royal Commission for Drafting the National Agenda in 2005; received many awards, incl. the Grand British Empire (GBE) Award.

ولد في نابلس في عام 1942؛ تابع دراسته في جامعة النجاح الوطنية، نابلس، ودرس في جامعة ولاية شمال تكساس، حيث تخرج منها ببكالوريوس في إدارة الأعمال في 1965؛ عاد إلى الأردن وعمل في البنك المركزي من 1965 - 1973 ؛ انتخب عضواً في مجلس النواب الأردني، وبدأ العمل في الحكومة الأردنية، وتولى عدة مراكز، منها: وزير دولة للأراضي المحتلة 1973-1974 سفير الأردن في اسبانيا 1975-1978، ممثل مؤقت للأردن في اليونسكو 1978-1983 وسفير في فرنسا، باريس 1978 - 1983 سفير غير مقيم لبلجيكا 1979- 1980، سفير للملكة المتحدة 1983 - 1984؛ وزير الخارجية الأردني 1984 - 1988، 1991؛ نائب رئيس الوزراء الأردني ووزير دولة للشؤون الاقتصادية 1989، رئيس لجنة العلاقات الخارجية مجلس النواب الأردني 1989 - 1991 ، 1992 - 1993 رئيس مجلس النواب الأردني 1993 - 1994؛ عضو ومفوض اللجنة الملكية لصياغة الميثاق الوطني الأردني في 1990؛ رئيس مجلس مركز الأميرة هيا الثقافي للأطفال منذ 1992؛ رئيس المجتمع الوطني من اجل تعزيز الحرية والديمقراطية من 1993 - 1997؛ عضو جمعية الدفاع عن القدس الشريف من 1996 - 2001 ومنذ 2003؛ رئيس مجلس أمناء الجامعة الأردنية للعلوم والتكنولوجيا، إربد، منذ 1998؛ رئيس جمعية الصداقة الأردنية الاسبانية منذ 1998؛ مفوض قضايا المجتمع المدني في الجامعة العربية منذ 2002؛ عضو اللجنة الاستشارية لمؤسسة - Anna Lindh Euro Mediterranean للحوار منذ 2004؛ عضو ورئيس اللجنة السياسية للجنة الملكية لصياغة جدول الأعمال الوطني في 2005؛ حصل على العديد من الجوائز، منها جائزة الكبرى في الإمبراطورية البريطانية.
