KHALIL, SAMIHA (UMM KHALIL) (1923-1999)

Born in Anabta, Tulkarem, on 4 April 1923; lived in the 1940s in Asqalan; became a refugee in 1948, feeling to the Gaza Strip; in 1952, left Gaza by boat to Beirut and returned to the West Bank; member of Al-Maqassed Islamic Society since 1955; established the Arab Women’s Union in Al-Bireh and served as its Director since 1955; studied two years Arabic Literature at Beirut University, Lebanon, from 1964-67; returned and worked as a charity worker ever since; member of the PNC since 1965; Pres. of the GUPW since 1965; Exec. Committee member of the Union of Charitable Societies, Jerusalem, since 1965; Pres. of the Women’s Federation Society, Al-Bireh; Founder and Pres. of In’ash Al-Usra Society since 1967; member of the YWCA since 1975; only female member of the National Guidance Committees from 1978-82; President of the Union of Voluntary Women’s Societies since 1987; was arrested six times by Israel and put under house arrest for two and a half years; member of several other local organizations; critical of the Oslo process; announced on 11 Dec. 1995 her candidacy for presidency challenging PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat, but was defeated in the Jan. 1996 elections, winning 11% of the votes; active member in the popular committee in solidarity with the Iraqi people; wrote zajal folk poems; died in Al-Bireh on 26 Feb. 1999.

خليل، سميحة (ام خليل) (1923 - 1999) ولدت في عنبتا بطولكرم في الرابع من نيسان/ إبريل عام 1923؛ عاشت في الأربعينات في عسقلان؛ أصبحت لاجئة خلال نكبة فلسطين عام 1948 وفرّت إلى قطاع غزة؛ وفي عام 1952 تركت غزة بالقارب وتوجهت إلى بيروت وعادت إلى الضفة الغربية؛ عضو في جمعية المقاصد الخيرية الإسلامية منذ عام 1955؛ مؤسسة ومديرة اتحاد المرأة العربية في البيرة منذ عام 1955؛ درست لمدة عامين الأدب العربي في جامعة بيروت بلبنان خلال (1964-1967)؛ عادت إلى فلسطين وعملت كناشطة اجتماعية؛ عضو في المجلس الوطني الفلسطيني منذ سنة 1964؛ رئيسة الاتحاد العام للمرأة الفلسطينية؛ رئيسة جمعية اتحاد المرأة في البيرة؛ مؤسسة ورئيسة جمعية إنعاش الأسرة منذ عام 1967؛ عضو في جمعية الشابات المسيحية منذ عام 1975؛ المرأة الوحيدة في لجنة التوجيه الوطني خلال (1978-1982)؛ رئيسة اتحاد الجمعيات النسوية المتطوعة منذ عام 1987؛ اعتقلتها إسرائيل ستة مرات ووضعتها تحت الإقامة الجبرية لمدة سنتين ونصف؛ عضو في العديد من المنظمات المحلية الأخرى؛ أعلنت في الحادي عشر من كانون الأول/ ديسمبر عام 1995 عن ترشيحها للرئاسة في منافسة أمام رئيس منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية ياسر عرفات، ولكنها لم تنجح في الانتخابات الرئاسية التي أجرت في كانون الثاني/ يناير عام 1996، حيث حصلت على ما نسبته 11 % من الأصوات؛ عضو ناشطة في اللجنة الشعبية بالتضامن مع الشعب العراقي؛ كتبت قصائد فلكلورية زجل؛ توفيت في البيرة في 26 شباط/ فبراير عام 1999.
