AL-KHATIB, DIYA’ EDDIN AL-KANANI (1902-1982)

Born in Jerusalem in 1902; attended Al-Ma’muniyah School, the Frères College, and the English College, where he was tutored by Nakhleh Zureiq; graduated with a BA in History from the AUB in Lebanon in 1925; worked as school teacher at the Dar Al-Mu’allimin and published history articles in the college journal; continued his education in the UK, graduating with an MA in History from the University of London in 1930; worked as history teacher at the Arab College in Jerusalem; taught in a secondary school in Hebron and became its headmaster in 1935; resigned from the Education Dept. and joined the Higher Islamic Shari’a Council, becoming General Inspector of Shari’a Courts; served as preacher (Khatib) of Al-Aqsa Mosque; appeared as a witness before the 1946 Anglo-American Inquiry Commission; had to flee to Syria after the 1948 War and lived in Aleppo, where he continued his profession as school teacher of history and geography; moved to Damascus in 1961 and worked as Assistant Director of Education for UNRWA schools in Syria; died in July 1982.

الخطيب، ضياء الدين الكناني (1902 - 1982) ولد في القدس عام 1902؛ تلقى تعليمه في مدارس القدس المأمونية، وكلية الفرير، و السانت جورج، وتلقى دروساً خصوصية على يد نخله زريق؛ حاصل على شهادة البكالوريوس في التاريخ من الجامعة الأمريكية ببيروت عام 1925؛ عمل مدرساً في دار المعلمين ونشر مقالات في التاريخ العربي في مجلة الكلية؛ أكمل تعليمه في المملكة المتحدة وحصل على شهادة البكالوريوس في التاريخ من جامعة لندن عام 1930؛ عمل مدرساً في مادة التاريخ في الكلية العربية بالقدس؛ درّس في مدرسة ثانوية في الخليل وأصبح مدير المدرسة عام 1935؛ استقال من دائرة التربية والتعليم وانضم إلى المجلس الإسلامي الأعلى، حيث أصبح مفتشاً عاماً للمحاكم الشرعية؛ واعظ خطيبفي المسجد الأقصى؛ قدم شهادة فلسطينية أمام لجنة التحقيق الانجليزية - الأمريكية؛ اضطر للهجرة إلى سوريا بعد اندلاع حرب أل 1948 وتابع مهنته كأستاذ مدرسة لمادتي التاريخ والجغرافيا؛ انتقل إلى دمشق عام 1961 وعمل كمساعد مدير للتربية والتعليم في مدارس الأونروا في سوريا؛ توفي في تموز/ يوليو عام 1982.
