AL-KHOURY, GIRIES (1924-)

Born in Taybeh, near Ramallah, in 1924; grew up in Jerusalem; was educated at Al-Rashidiyeh College in Jerusalem until 1942, then enrolled at the Jerusalem Law College, from where he graduated in 1947; was a founding member of the Jordan Bar Association in 1949; member of the Exec. Council of the Jordan Bar Association from 1949-67; served as Chairman of the Lawyers’ Union in the West Bank from 1967-84; was among the initiators of the lawyers’ strike in the West Bank in 1967; founding member and Chairman of the Exec. Council of the Professional Association Center, Jerusalem, from 1970-84; was one of the architects of the National Guidance Committee from 1978-83; was repeatedly arrested by Israeli authorities for political agitation and alleged ‘incitement’ against the occupation during 1980-81 and placed under town and house arrest; serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arab Thought Forum, Jerusalem, since 1977; in 1980, was the first Christian Palestinian to make a political speech in the Haram Ash-Sharif compound since 1929, on the occasion of a conference against settlements held by the National Guidance Committee; is honorary member of the Higher Islamic Committee in Jerusalem since 8 Oct. 1987.

الخوري، جريس (1924 - ) ولد في الطيبة قضاء رام الله عام 1924؛ نشأ وترعرع في الطيبة والقدس منذ عام 1934؛ تلقى تعليمه في كلية الرشيدية في القدس حتى عام 1942؛ ثم التحق بمعهد الحقوق الفلسطيني في القدس وتخرج عام 1947؛ عضو مؤسس نقابة المحامين الأردنية عام 1949؛ عضواً في المجلس التنفيذي لنقابة المحامين الأردنية خلال (1949-1967)؛ نقيب المحاميين في نقابة المحامين الأردنية، القدس خلال الأعوام (1967-1984)؛ من المبادرين لإضراب المحامين في الضفة الغربية عام 1967؛ عضو مؤسس ورئيس مجلس النقباء في مجمع النقابات المهنية بالقدس خلال (1970-1984)؛ من أقطاب مؤسسي لجنة التوجيه الوطني خلال (1978-1983)؛ رئيس نقابة المحامين في الضفة الغربية في أوائل الثمانينات؛ قيام السلطات الإسرائيلية باعتقاله وحسبه لمدة عام (1980- 1981) ووضعه تحت الإقامة الجبرية بتهمة التحريض ضد الاحتلال الإسرائيلي؛ رئيس مجلس أمناء جمعية الملتقى العربي بالقدس منذ عام 1978 حتى 2006.
