Description
This Was 2006 is the seventh volume of its kind providing a day-to-day review of the internal and external events affecting the Palestinian people. 2006 witnessed significant changes in both the Palestinian and Israeli political landscapes. Israeli Prime Minister Sharon was incapacitated by a massive stroke and was replaced with Ehud Olmert, after the newly founded Kadima Party he headed won the Israeli elections. The year also ushered in elections for the PLC and the victory of Hamas’ Change and Reform Party – a ‘political earthquake’ in Palestinian politics. Other remarkable events of that year included the Israeli raid of the PA’s prison in Jericho, seizing PFLP leader Ahmed Saadat along with other inmates, the formation of the Hamas government, adoption of the National Reconciliation Document (Prisoner Document), and Israel’s massive aerial and artillery bombardment of targets in Lebanon and its continuous incursions into Gaza.
