PASSIA Seminar on Advocacy & Lobbying

Course Outline
- Preparation
In July 2016, PASSIA began to consult with colleagues and experts – both locally and internationally – in order to plan and implement the training program. The seminar was advertised in the local press during August, and notification was also given to national institutions such as NGOs, youth and research centers. No fees for undertaking the course are required from the participants.
- Participant Selection Procedure
By the deadline of 31 August 2016, PASSIA had received a large number of applications from all over the Palestinian Territories. Of these, shortlisted candidates were invited for interviews. In line with PASSIA policy not to interfere in the selection process, Mr. Saad Halawani, Society Program Manager at the British Council, was commissioned to conduct interviews in early September. Altogether, 30 of the applicants were selected to participate in the training program.
- Reading Period
Following their selection, participants received preparatory reading material to enable them to become familiar with the background of the seminar (situation in Jerusalem) beforehand. With this, they also received the following writing assignment:
Please choose one of the following two writing assignments and send it to PASSIA by latest 22 September 2016. Please elaborate on 1-2 pages in either Arabic or English.
- “Describe a real advocacy/lobbying issue that you are currently involved in (or have been in involved in the past) and try to explain the issues you believe have led to its success or failure.”
- “Identify an advocacy/lobbying issue that you wish to focus on and develop in the future and explain why, including the project’s significance and its desired results.”
- Lecture Program
From 24-27 September 2016 a series of presentations, lectures, workshops and exercises will be given by experts in their respective fields. The participants will be encouraged to relate what they learn to their own work. During the four-day seminar, beverages, luncheon and snacks for all participants and lecturers will be provided by PASSIA.
- Certification
At the close of the program, participants who performed all required tasks will be handed a certificate affirming their successful participation in the training program.
