Born in Jerusalem in 1961; grew up in the Jalazoun Refugee Camp, near Ramallah; studied Economics at Birzeit University, graduating with a BA in 1986; continued his studies at New York University, US, graduating with a Diploma in Film and Video Production and an MA in Film Theory and Criticism in 1994; also attended post-graduate seminars in Ethnographic Film; returned to Ramallah in 1996 and established his own filming company, the Refugee Camp Productions; began making films with a focus on the themes of Diaspora and dispossession; has participated in several film festivals worldwide and has won several awards; also works as columnist, songwriter, artist and lecturer; his films include the documentaries My Very Private Map (1998), which won the PRIX IMA as best short documentary at the Biennale of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, Women in the Sun (1998), Ali and His Friends (1999), Light at the End of the Tunnel (2000), Looking Awry (2001), Crossing Kalandia (2002) and Palestine for Dummies (2003).
