Born in Haifa in 1875; studied in Al-Jazzar Mosque in Gaza, then specialized in Islamic Religion and Arabic Language at Al-Azhar University (some sources say University of Constantinople); worked in the Haifa Shari’a Court; became Mufti of Haifa in 1915; was a member of the delegation of 20 ‘ulama, writers and notables that headed to Istanbul in 1915 to congratulate Jamal Pasha for his victory over the allies and express loyalty to the Ottoman government; participated in the protests against the British Mandate and Zionist plans in 1918; was among the organizers of an Arab Palestinian conference in 1920, calling for the prevention of Zionist immigration; was briefly arrested by the British in 1921 for his opposition to the Mandate policies; became a member of the first Supreme Muslim Council in March 1921 and was elected in Jan. 1922 as the Council’s representative for the Haifa district; headed a fundraising delegation to India and another Islamic delegation to Al-Hijaz in 1923 to mobilize funds for the renovation of Al-Aqsa Mosque; helped establish the Al-Istilal Mosque in Haifa, where Sheikh Izz Eddin Al-Qassam preached; was member of the Islamic Council representing the Acre area; resigned from his post as Mufti in 1929 to join the mujahedin; said to have been killed in a battle against Zionists in Karmel settlement in 1929.
