SAMIHA (UMM KHALIL) KHALIL

Birth: 4/4/1923 Death:26/2/1999
Born in Anabta, Tulkarem, on 4 April 1923; lived in the 1940s in Asqalan; became a refugee in 1948, feeling to the Gaza Strip; in 1952, left Gaza by boat to Beirut and returned to the West Bank; member of Al-Maqassed Islamic Society since 1955; established the Arab Women’s Union in Al-Bireh and served as its Director since 1955; studied two years Arabic Literature at Beirut University, Lebanon, from 1964-67; returned and worked as a charity worker ever since; member of the PNC since 1965; Pres. of the GUPW since 1965; Exec. Committee member of the Union of Charitable Societies, Jerusalem, since 1965; Pres. of the Women’s Federation Society, Al-Bireh; Founder and Pres. of In’ash Al-Usra Society since 1967; member of the YWCA since 1975; only female member of the National Guidance Committees from 1978-82; President of the Union of Voluntary Women’s Societies since 1987; was arrested six times by Israel and put under house arrest for two and a half years; member of several other local organizations; critical of the Oslo process; announced on 11 Dec. 1995 her candidacy for presidency challenging PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat, but was defeated in the Jan. 1996 elections, winning 11% of the votes; active member in the popular committee in solidarity with the Iraqi people; wrote zajal folk poems; died in Al-Bireh on 26 Feb. 1999.
