Born in Lifta in 1948; fled with her family to Ramallah during the 1948 Nakba, when she was seven months old; was very active in the student movement and in scouts activities; joined the ANM at the early age of 13; after completing school, worked as a teacher for one year, then enrolled at the Arab University in Beirut to study Sociology; became a PFLP member since 1967; returned to the OPT during a vacation and was arrested on 28 Feb. 1969, accused of involvement in two bomb attacks in Jerusalem (one in a supermarket, one at the British Consulate); was sentenced to three life terms in prison and spent about 10 years in Israeli jails, mainly in Neve Tirzah in Ramleh; was tortured and abused psychologically, physically and sexually during her imprisonment (well documented is one incident where soldiers tried to sexually abuse her in the presence of her father); lost her sight for one month as a result of physical abuse; tried to escape from Neve Tirzah Prison via a tunnel but was caught; was deported in 1979 as part of a prisoner exchange that took place in the Geneva airport, from where she traveled to Libya; then moved to Damascus and Lebanon; continued her social and political work while in exile; was elected member of the PFLP Central Committee since 1980; served as a member of the administrative council of the GUPW since Feb. 1980; following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982; moved to Al-Yarmouk Refugee Camp in Syria, where she worked with the PLO Returnees’ Affairs Committee; PNC member since April 1987; pursued her studies at Al-Ahliyyeh University in Amman in Business Administration in 1994, graduating with a BA; returned to Palestine in 1996; studied Law at Al-Quds University, graduating in 2000; currently works on legal issues in Ramallah and continues her activities on women’s issues in cooperation with GUPW.
