Born in Gaza in 1953; nephew of Yasser Arafat; joined Fateh in 1969; elected member of the GUPS Exec. Committee in 1974, later Pres. of the GUPS; PNC member from 1975; studied Dentistry at Cairo University, graduating in 1979; joined the Palestinian Red Crescent and became observer member of its Executive Committee in 1980; PLO Central Council member from 1981; appointed alternate Palestinian observer at the UN from 1986; observer member of the Fateh Revolutionary Council since 1981 and full member since 1989; Palestinian permanent observer to the UN from 1991; PNC deputy speaker until his resignation in Oct. 1993 in protest over the DoP and the PLO’s failure to have the PNC vote on it; became FM in the Cabinet of PM Ahmed Qrei’a in Feb. 2005 (until after the 2006 PLC elections).
