Born in Arrabeh near Jenin in 1938; educated in Arrabeh (until 9th grade) then worked as a farmer; moved to Amman in 1950; joined the ANM in 1955 and soon confronted the Jordanian authorities, urging that all British officers in the Jordanian army be fired; arrested by the Jordanian authorities and imprisoned in April 1957; sentenced to five years in Al-Jafar Prison and released in 1961; became responsible for the ANM’s Northern District of the West Bank; received military training in Egypt in 1965, then headed the ANM in Jordan from 1966, until he was re-arrested during a sweep by the Jordanian government against the ANM that year and imprisoned without trial for several months in Zarka Prison; after the 1967 War, joined George Habash in forming the PFLP; became responsible for the PFLP in the West Bank; PNC member since 1968; infiltrated and organized commandos inside Palestine and formed the PFLP underground body; served as PFLP military commander-in-chief from 1968-71; then moved to Lebanon; was elected deputy to the PFLP’s Sec.-Gen. George Habash at the 3rd National Conference of the PFLP in 1972; led the PFLP delegation at the Aden-Algiers talks in 1984 to reunify the PLO; member of the PLO Exec. Committee from 1987-91 and PLO-CC member; was allowed to return to the OPT in Aug. 1999; was elected Sec.-Gen. of the PFLP at its 6th National Conference on 8 July 2000, after Habash announced his resignation; advocated the continuation of Palestinian resistance until Israel left the OPT and the independent Palestinian state was established; was killed by an Israeli missile attack in his office in Ramallah on 27 Aug. 2001.
