Born in the Balata Refugee Camp near Nablus on 25 Feb. 1960; became prominent Islamist student leader while studying at An-Najah National University; holds a BA in Accounting and Business Administration; early leader of Hamas in the West Bank; among the deportees to Marj Az-Zuhur in Dec. 1992; became Hamas spokesman to dialogue with the PA; one of the major organizers of Hamas’ political activities in the West Bank; spent five years in Israeli jails and two in PA custody (released in late 2000); was assassinated on 31 July 2001 in an Israeli helicopter missile strike on his office in Nablus.
