Born on 11 April 1958; member of Meretz since 1989; Chairperson of Na’amat Union in Taybeh from 1992-94; Women’s and Youth Director in the Jewish-Arab Institute in Beit Berl from 1995-1997; was a running candidate of the left-wing Meretz Party in the 1999 elections and won a seat, making her the first Palestinian woman ever to be elected to Israel’s Knesset; was blamed to run for Meretz and not for one of the Arab parties active in Israel; served for one term (until 2003), during which she was member of the Education, Culture, and Sports Committee, the Committee on the Status of Women, and the Labor, Social Affairs and Health Committee, as well as Chairperson for the Subcommittee for the Advancement of the Status of Arab Women; acts as Chairperson of the Middle East Dept. in the International Institute at Beit Berl; Board of Directors member of Bat Shalom.
