HAIDAR MAHMOUD

Born in Haifa in 1942; received an MA in Public Administration from the University of California in Los Angeles, USA; became Dir.-Gen. of Culture and Arts at the Jordanian Ministry of Culture from 1980-88; then worked as advisor to the Jordanian PM for two years; in 1991, was appointed Jordanian Ambassador to Tunisia, serving for nine years, during which time he became dean of the diplomatic corps in Tunisia; served as Dir.-Gen. of Al-Hussein Cultural Center in Amman from 1999-2002; was named a member of the new Higher Media Council in 2002; became Jordanian Minister of Culture and member of the Higher Information Council in 2002; has written poetry as well as two plays; regularly contributes to Jordanian newspapers, specialized in the fields of poetry and literature; won awards for his poetry, incl. the Ibn Khafaja Prize from Spain (1986); his publications include Collected Works (1990) and Works of Poetry (Al-A’mal Al-Shi’riyyah) (2001).
